Yes, I thought it would be fun! And different.
For a number of reasons.
First, I'm primarily interested in seeing if I can use the meager resources available to build the culture needed, and win the races to build wonders (for that matter, can I muster the Science to learn the required Techs in a timely enough matter?)
Second, I don't believe I can muster enough of an army to do adequate leader chasing, especially with no continental cities. I have no resources, so my attack units would be Archers (and eventually Longbows). At the maximum of 4 cities on the starting island, I could get up to 16 free units in Despotism, and pay for additional above that; most importantly I'd have to settle on valueable hills spaces to build the cities. My production would be very poor, and I would kill any chance to build the Wonders outright that I'd need.
Third, while pursuing the GL's, my research would suffer and the AI would really take off. Archers vs Pikes (or Muskets) - not pretty.
Fourth, it's a somewhat random element, and I desired to attack this approach with as much straight logical thinking as I could. And in part to demonstrate some of the tactics available to the player.
Quick game is good, too! I took this approach because I remember an early Warlord level game submitted by DaveMcW where all he did was build 5 Early Wonders, then press enter for the rest of the game. 30 minutes was all it took to get the 20K, and the AI never made contact with him on his remote landmass.
My culture never occupied much continental land; the AI's culture more or less seemed to prevent that.
By the way, it's good to see you pop in!
