Hello,

What do you think is best ?
Construct as big army and destroy every one around or
develop your civilization by creating lot of cities ?

LeSphinx

Well I already finished it, but not before 1980 or so :/
Didnt get rail untill 1920 hehe. This was my first GOTM, and i really like the idea.

I didnt do "everything" to max my score, just played like I usually do =) I dont even know most of the hidden tricks in civ(is there a list somewhere?).

Ok I was a bit lucky, got a horseman in left hut and then a city in the right :) Normally I dont dare going into huts, barbarians always seem to like me. I even lost a city to the barbarians in this GOTM for a few rounds.

I just wish I had found this GOTM before=) 'Cause normally when I play I kinda cheatsave alittle, but here was a reason not to do it, more risk more fun :D (though the risk is somewhat limited to the poor ai )

Incubuz

BTW can anyone tell me how to make those animated gifs? I did make one with animation shop, but hey I got the entire picture. So I wondered if there was a prog which could just take the minimap view from a picture and make it into a frame?

I dont want to cut every picture :)

Well i've played to 1AD. I have 26 cities and only the Vikings and Spanish remain, they have 3-4 cities each.
I am preparing to smack the Vikings around soon, and then get the Spanish to one city, grow like hell and finish early.

I think you need to be agressive in this game, otherwise you will have no room to expand.

I'm in 1 ad, have got 45 cities, a population of 2,2 million people, 19 settlers, have just completed mikes, and have a few traderoutes. I had a lot of luk with huts early my first 3 was something like this:

1. Chariot
2. Tribe
3. Tribe

BTW I took the one on the river first.

Growth in my cities was slowed down a little because of the lack of pyramids which was built in Thebe. However, when sailing the cost close to the egyptian empire I found 3 (YES 3!!!) Barbarian leaders just standing there. One of them fell to my ship the two others were smacked by a chariot who had been taking part of the capturing of Thebe :egypt:. Ahhh, growth is good again, ;)

That's it for now, I must say that I think I'm doing very good, :)

I decided to push the Hanging Gardens to the limit.I have no plan other than that.

At 1AD I have 47 cities.Thats almost 1 every 2 turns. Not bad for 1x emperor.Course I also had red and black hats all over.Mich's and Theology took care of them so I could fire any Elvi'.
I'm now in the 200s AD with 50+ cities and 85% of the map is American.

I could have pushed for a bc conquest but..geez..game of the month over in 1 day?..so I will piddle around for a while.Currently Republic, doing some "We Loving".This doesn't seem like emperor level.

I've done a little sleazing in "ICS Alley" province.

ICS Alley

..and my little theme park "Wonderland"
Wonderland

changed to links cuz they were killing the thread.:)

Well since time if something I lack to uch I wanted to try and see how fast I could kill the enemy so I just build a lot of horsemen, chariots and Elephants and started exploring and I ahve been havning so much fiun doing this that I didn't realise that I had played into 900BC and not really gotten stated on my Civ yet......

But that will have to cahnge now - I have to get a little civ up and standing - everthing els would be to much against the way I think........

Hey Chofrtiz good to see that your doing so well - are you useing some of the suggestions that I ahve given you or just made some up yourself???

Here are some saves from my game - I really must get my act together :D but this way I save so much time......

:sniper:

This is my first GOTM and I think my tactic totally sucked. I started out great with a chariot, then founded Washington, then I got a tribe next to rome, and a troop too. So I took rome after some turns of waiting it to be 2. After that, I explored and found the AI's, and demanded tribute as long as they had money. Then I built some cities, and stayed with 9 cities for a long time (didn't know when people start to get unhappy). At 1 AD I had the colussus, the pyramids, the hanging gardens, and was like 4 turns from building coopernicus observation.

I bought caravans like crazy. It's really not my style, because I still can't make those trade routes an advantage for the loss of time it takes to build/buy those caravans. I should have just used all the caravans to build wonders. At 1 AD I only had 12 cities and a crappy science. (the AI's didn't want to trade with me...those bastards!)

Now I am at 1200 AD with only 15 cities. I will keep playing though. It will be really interesting to see everyones games later.

I get more and more impressed by you people. Smash and Chofritz....50 cities!! Good thinking! :)

To Shadowdale:
Yes I try to use someof the ideas that you gave me. I'm concentrating a lot more now to get 3 traderoutes in every city asap... I could have expanded even more but I hold back growth a little because of the unhappiness. I'm in 300 ad now heading for explosives... I've only got 3 (and only built 2 myself) wonders

Well I better go kick some AI's now...

And BTW I get very frustrated ever time my science slows down... I wanna gift the techs to the AI, BUT THERE IS NO PURPLE CIV!!!

Is there a way to get around this? Or do have to live with a slow science?

Hey, a lot of players have started to played GOTM 9 .

I planed to start yesterday night but finaly I can't.
Reading the different strategies in the forum fot GOTM 9, I think I will be very agressive this time. It's not the way I play usualy but well, the small map is good for this kind of strategy.

I started last night and played to 1 AD. I met the Romans early and took an aggressive stance against them by destroying a city and building mine in it's place. So they are pretty much cut off. I've also met the Carthangans, and Egyptians. I destroyed an Egyptian city with my exploring Legion. Then the Carthangans sneak attacked and took out my diplo. The Romans have also sneak attacked me twice!!

I'm ahead in military tech as I'm the only civ with knights and pikeman...but in other tech...I'm a little behind. However I was the first to get Philo. ;) And Monarchy which I managed to get for my 2nd or 3rd tech choice!!!

But even with all that my empire is still fairly small. With only 7 cities, I'm in the top 3 (Which are very close together) on the powergraph. Now the Romans are going to be exiting the game VERY soon...so I'll have more cities and room at that time. I've also got my saved game schedule figured out for my animated .gif. ;)

Well, I got killed again!

I tried using the 'hut pattern' to my advantage but it did not work so well. I decided to go first to the western hut with my settler. According to the 'hut pattern' one tile over from that hut would be a good site for a city - one with 4 specials.

So I went there and got 50 gold from the hut. I also then saw that the tile I had planned to build my capital on was a desert. :o

So I went once more to the 'hut pattern'. Should eb another hut two tiles west and a nice place to build a capital. So I went and there was no hut because there was ocean.

3750bc I founded my capital on the west coast and started a warrior. 3500bc he is ready and I start a settler. The warrior went to the hut on the river which was a barb horseman who promptly killed my whole army.

I had researched horseback riding so I changed from making a settler to making a horseman. He was ready in 3050bc and once again I started a settler.

My horseman made contact with the Romans in 2600bc. I traded 2 techs but declined peace. (Still haven't learned my lesson from GOTM 7!):o A Roman sneak attack immediately followed and once again my entire army is decimated.

I chose to continue building my settler when what to my wondering eyes should appear? A jolly fat man in a red suit. No - not Santa but a barbarian archer. Why was he so jolly you ask? Because he landed right next to my undefended capital! The rest is history.

I feel your pain

Is it against the rules to restart the game now? I know it's not possible for me, but for you...it might be a good thing to know for the future.

I feel all sad and stupid, like a loser.

I'm NOT turning in this game of the month.

I feel stupid too. Everytime I start civ2 to finnish the game, I think of everyhing I COULD have done, and don't really feel like playing anymore. I am not turning this game in either....I am not even gonna finnish it.

On the other hand, maybe I should. Doing something I don't like probably builds my character.
:p

In my game, it is past 1900 and I have three cities, I am not kidding you. But at least I'm 1st in tech because I have the Great Library. I got a free ride there.

Restarting a GOTM is bad form IMHO. If I have a bad game I live with it and submit it. Becka and el_kalkylus your games can't be worse than mine so go ahead and submit. Nothing to be ashamed of! I did good (for me) in GOTM 8 so I don't mind taking my lumps here. It's all in fun anyway.

After I got killed off in GOTM 7 I started a game (on the easiest level) to try for High Score Hall of Fame. I put that aside to play GOTM 8 and now that I've messed up the current GOTM I'm back to that one.

Next month a Civ III GOTM?;)

One little problem. I got so caught up in being the Stupidest Civlization on Earth (a title I bestowed upon myself ;) ), that I completely forgot to save my games that you're supposed to submit. :o Whoops!
