GOTM9 * Spoiler* Talks

Well, this GOTM was a real flop. The only time I went above my normal playing level(Prince) before this was a Deity where I was slaughtered in 2000 BC. I was very proud that I could last until 2007(when a yellow SS landed, mine had been launched but not landing until 201_) and I was not destroyed by the carthiginians stealth tech against my pea-shooter fighters and riflemen. I learned a ton from this GOTM and I will be playing a lot more games at the Emporer level.

Does an enemy space ship landing count for a win on emporer? Oh well, I got a 50% civ rating witch is good for a first time emporer, or so I hear. I stayed on the first continent, killed the romans, had 15 cities(approx.), and took back the only city ever capured of mine. My SSC didn't work but, in a later game I got 1000+ science from a city in democracy. I had every city WLTPD for some time before cutting luxories for tax.

Pardon any typing errors, I am typing with one broken arm and a working one. My coordination is way off. If anyone has time, please explain the so-called "freight bonus" I have heard so much about.

You game sounds like a fine one to me... no, if the AI beat you to AC, then it won't be a "win". BTW, if you go all out and capture the AI capital when it launches a SS, it will kill the AI SS!! You can then arrive at AC at your own liesure!

If anyone has time, please explain the so-called "freight bonus"
When you deliver a freight (or a caravan), you get some gold. You also get an equal amount of Science in the bonus. The amount of delivery bonus is dependent on a number of factors, but you want the max distance between the cities, Democracy, a different continent, Superhighways, and Airports for the best bonus. Each city should max it's available "natural" arrows before delivery (trade route arrows don't count for the bonus).

thanks starlifter! Stuff is finally starting to make sense. I now can implement this into my games and really start to benefit. I can't wait for GOTM 10 to give this my first "official" test.

You game sounds like a fine one to me...

Well, i guess this game wasn't that bad, it was fun and I learned stuff. I'll be sticking around here for a long time. I have never forgotten to find time for civ(even if it means a late night). I am a true blue civ fanatic for the last 8 years starting with the ever-famous precedent to it all:::: CIVILIZATION ::::

Looks like a spaceship somewhere between 1500-1600ad for me.

Trading with the ai was a bust so I built my own city to trade with

Just Egypt left and currently under full trade embargo and lock down

Operation Close Egypt

isn't nice of that settler to work my land for me...

I noticed your road on the tundra is missing... Make sure you have roads (&RRs) on your actual routes our of the city, to get the 50% and 50% bonuses... this would be worth the effort if that city is a major trade partner. I'm assuming it is on the same continent ,since that whole landmass is connected. If the city is on an island, disregard the above :).

LOL... Your names are so funny!

lol
first Shadowdales Engineer fleet and now that
You guys are really crazy :crazyeyes ;)

..or is it?
Trade will be sooo much easier if ther is a 21-tile city that can be founded and not connected to the landmass! Roads and RRs are such a pain to build because of all the interconnected possibilities. That's why my tentative plan in 1 AD is to just run several short SSC (like Wash-Philly) routes, where the road will be easily connected & get the 50% road bonus. This is probably going to be a game that needs lots of roads, and not merely airfields... since airfields don't do diddly for trade.

Can someone explain a bit more about what this means? I'm still trying to get up to speed with the benefits of trade, but I don't understand what a "21 tile city" is, why you would or wouldn't want it connected to a landmas, or what the problems are with roads/rails?

Thanks!

A city can occupy a maximum of 21 tiles (or "squares"). It is a 5x5 area, without the corners (25-4-21), but the squares look squished in an isometric view, so they are often called tiles.

Trade is a long subject to discuss fully, but in this particular context, the landmass affects both the initial bonus and trade route bonus.... the effect is to double both bonuses if the source and destination city are on different continents (landmasses). It you can build the correct road and RR, you can get a 100% bonus, too (50% + 50%). Not just any old road will do, though... only a certain path that is the computer's idea of "shortest distance".. but this is not easy to predict, so you either need to build solid roads across everything, or can try using the "goto" function to pick the RR path, once you have solid roads. BTW, Airfields will not do for roads/trade.

Feel free to search about trade/democracy, etc. (use my name as a search parameter can help narrow the search). I've written volumes, and won't make a whole new 10,000 character post of rehash. These links may get you started, and have more views than just mine, too:

This is my first GOTM also, and it's turned out to be harder than I expected to play a game that will come out high in the rankings :( . I always play on Deity, but have been using Bloodlust (no Spaceship) exclusively for years. I realize now that I typically play a long game, and ought to master the SSC game to become a better GOTM (although who knows how Civ3 will change strategies ...) :mutant:

I'm 20 years from retirement, researching advanced flight, so the SS looks like a bust.

I started out by roping off a good chunk of land, got a late start on the Republic but once I was rolling I quickly led the world in population and technology. All of the AI's turned Hostile once I had a solid lead, and the Romans were a thorn in my side. :midfinger:

I wish I had polished the Romans off early, but I didn't want to get bogged down in a production-sapping war. They never built many cities, but had a hard time honoring peace treaties. Fortunately a well placed fortress kept them at bay pretty painlessly, and towards the end I just started munching a single city each time they broke the peace. Now they're history! :slay:

I've kept wars with the others to a minimum, building the UN for this reason, choosing to focus on developing my territory to go after SS. The Egyptians are not too far behind in tech, the Carthaginians are annoying but not much of a threat. :p

I built Colossus (by accident), Mike, Bach, UN, Hoover, and SETI (in a vain attempt to get the techs for SS in time). :smoke:

As I said, I've learned I need to practice the SS and SSC strategies, and in general work on developing more quickly. I don't do a lot with trade, although I've generated a handful of it in this game. Hopefully I'll turn in my rather mediocre game in the next day or two.
:grad:

Well, after taking the last GOTM off I'm back on board for this one.

I have started out this GOTM as an OCC game. I found a pretty decent site, but I'm still a relative novice at OCC and the going is slower than I had hoped.

When I finish, I'll post a basic timeline.

Hey Starlifter, where can you get the ULead GIF Animator 5
I borrowed a copy and installed it a week ago to give it a try (I've got friends & relatives in various software industries). There may be a trial version, however I have not searched for it. I usually like to try software (on my machine or at least someone else's) before buying it, since I've been screwed so many times on junkware that looks nice in a box.

Very few programs will I just buy without a strong recommendation or trying them first. Norton Utilities, Partition Magic, Civ III, HalfLife, SUSE Linux, Adobe Photoshop, ULead Dreamweaver (same people as make GIF Animator) are some examples of "good" software I'll buy off the shelf without "homework". But I'm not yet decided on the usefulness of GIF Animator, as I have other programs that can make animated GIFs, too. :)

I have a feeling this GotM means less points for me: a lower ranking. Well, that kinda things happen, but the last 3-4 GotM's I only came higher, and the last I kept position. I played a good game, build almost all wonders available and finished early, but still........must be the population I think.

The gotm score method does use the civ scoring system to an extent and in that population is the largest single factor in scoring. So you need to..well you know.But..the new system should give higher scores to early finshe than before.I don't think it will drastically alter results, but should give some recognition, in form gotm of points,to earlier finishes. For gold,I think you'll still need 4-6000 points(map size.level) by turn#200 to have a shot.

Although my predictions have been poor so far....I'm going to say....geez wish I coud get the excel program to work on my mac....lets see...small map...650 gotm score for gold.....something like 5000 by turn 200(including flight time)

Who will be the first to get 1000?

bets dollars to donuts someone has this in mind

I just finished my GOTM. I conquered the whole world. At first I wanted to build a spaceship. But when I discovered mobile warfare the Carthaginians became an easy target (net very developed). When I was done with them I continued and before I knew it the Egypians and the Vikings were gone too (one the main continent and there was only one city left of the Egypians on a peninsula of the south pole. I figured that building a spaceship wouldn't increase my score since that would've taken years and years, so I just took that last one too.

Ya, right.

well, i was pumelled in Gotm9, i totally bummed out.
after playing at king for a while, i got a 86% on my third game at king. Perhaps i'll play Gotm9 again, just for my own good.

I'm in 1850. I've calculated a launch date of 1857 for a full size SS, which will arrive in 1868.
I'm going to put the luxuries up now and grow until the SS lands. Unfortunately I don't have enough banks etc., so growth won't be as large as I'd hoped. I'll finish with about 70 cities + 20 new ones from my engineers who are currently working.
