GOTM9 * Spoiler* Talks

I'm currently in 840AD and have only a couple of Egyptian cities left. I'm just going all out for science and the SS now. I'm not expecting a finish before 1800, but 1850 is a chance.

The GOTM scores will be different sizes with the new formula. I think a small map like this will require a score of > 400 to win this month.

Attached is a .txt file with a detailed timeline, including strategy discussion.

Finaly, I started to play yesterday.

Aroud 200 AD, I had 25 cities and killed the romans. I captured 1 Carthagus city and destroy 2 others one.
But then, I made a mistake: I start to play as always (Democracy) -> I started to improve my civilization and I stop to expend and be agressive against the other civilizations...
I build some wonders: Colossus, Oracle, Michelango Chapel, King Charles, Leonard WorkShop, Copernicus Observatory, "Statue de la liberté" (I don't know this exact words in english).

Right now, I'm in 1700 AD, I think I have not manage the good positon I had around 1 AD - 300 AD.

So, I plan to turn in fundamentalism in order to fast my production and my money. Then, I will prepare my cities for WLTD and I will capture Carthagus cities and maybe vikings one.

I have no choise to go to SS.

Well...i didn't started so bad...actually i think it was quite good since i don't usually play at emperor!

In the beginning i went to the hut in the river (west) and got myself a horsemen, with this horsemen i went to the hut on the east and got a second NON horsemen.:D

I then build the capital in the river and started a settler.

I've managed to capture all the cities of the Romans with 3 Horsemen.

Now i'm in 1020 AD and have the starting continent full colonized until the city of Cartaghe in the Northwest.:king:

The problem is i forgot to save the game at 0 AD!!!

Portugal - Nation of Magellan's (from Magellan's Expedition)

This is the first time that I have played at emporor so I didn't know what to expect. I got off to a good start, horse from a hut, found Rome(1) and destroyed it. A few other huts, mostly advanced tribes, then I met Carthagians who were more aggressive so I fortified the pinchpoint mountain top, and set about developing my civ. However, the populus gets upset very easily, and I spent most of my time and effort trying to keep them happy.

Its circa 1900 now, I have a stable and profitable democracy, but i'm worried about how mush the other civs have developed in the mean time. They have not been fighting amongst themselves as I would have expected, so I'm not sure that conquest will be possible. I have tried sending in dips to buy them out, but they keep getting killed.

I liked this GOTM...I haven't played a small world in awhile, and it was nice to play a game with a good amount of medevial warfare. :goodjob:

Still, I played this game like most: I'm not so great at early expansion, preferring to conquer territory early (whether through military or bribing) and then "fill in" the gaps with cities once the region is under control. :rocket:

1AD - 10 Cities. Just made contact with the Romans and Carthaginians. While I was "Supreme" in power, the Powergraph showed that the pack was pretty tightly packed. No wonders built.

1000AD - 19 Cities. Beginning conquest of the Romans. Built Collosus and Chapel. My move "up the powerchart" began just after 1AD, and I was unipolar right around 1000AD.

Late 18th C. - 35 Cities. Romans, Carthaginians, and Vikings all conquered.

Conquest in 1945 - Finished with 79 cities, 104 million pop.

A great conquest game! :king:

I'm in the 700's ad, 70++ cities are placed and only trondheim remain to kill off. My population is about 12 millions and I've switched to demo, now it's time for some massive growth and after that an enginer pump.

Hello, everybody!

It's my first GOTM (even if I started GOTM8, I didn't have time to finish it, though I would have had a good score). I've been playing Civ since '93 and it's definitely my favourite game. I'm glad that I found Civfanatics and I'm sorry for not playing the other GOTM's.

My strategy in GOTM9 is simple: expansion. I found some units in the huts and sent them exploring and in nmy cities I started to build settlers. I bribed the barbarians that appeared because my cities were empty.;)

Romans were easy, they only had a phalanx in Rome when I reached them with my archer.:D About other civs, I'm at war with everyone I met and I put a unit fortified on the mountains. So I'm isolated at my part of the island (half of the map) and it should be enough for the moment. I switched to monarchy and now I'm expanding. :goodjob:

I keep yesterday on playing.

I destroy/capture alll the Carthagiam cities and I capture (with spy and a lot of money) 5 Egyptians cities around 12 population's points.

The Egyptians have 6 cities left and 2 for the vikings.

I'm in 1882 AD and my population is around 20 M people.

The next step is "We Love the Day..." in order to imporve population and a lot of caravan (transiting by railroad) in order to make momey quickly.

Hi all,

It's my first time posting on this forum, so please forgive me if I commit some faux pas.

I hate to say it, but my game so far has been pretty pathetic (mind you, I've also really never gone beyond Warlord...I'm more of a casual Civ player). It's around 1730 AD, I've got less than a million people, and nobody's even come up with Gunpowder yet. Come to think about it, only a couple of civilizations have actually entered the Renaissance so far.

(Actually, I've got the largest civilization out there right now, land wise.)

Is this common for a first-time Emperor game?

Best regards to all,

Robert Marks

This was my first Emperor game and I had three cities in 1900. By me, you're doing pretty darn good so far. :goodjob:

I`m in 1760 AD now. I had a lot of trouble with barbarians in the beginning who came out of the `goody` huts. I now have about 25 cities but there is no more space for me to expand. I am supreme (since about 1000 BC), the spanish are second, the carthaginians third, the romans fourth and the vikings fifth. In 1720 AD I attacked the romans and they only have 1 city left now. Science didn't go very well this game (i'm researchin theology or so at the moment) but I have got the most important WOTWs (Great Library, Mike's, Adam Smiths, Leonardo's)
I also built Oracle by accident. I have quite a huge army destroying the romans right now, so I think that after I've killed them I'm going to (try to) destroy the Carthaginians. In 1850 I want only 1 opponent to be left with 1 small city so that I can start boosting my score.:D

I won't tell you what happened the 1st time I tryed deity ;)..lets just say I am fortunate to still have a working computer :)

I think anytime you move up in anything, you should expect to be pummeled for abit. You are doing somewhat;) better than pummeled so it is a success.

The way you put that first paragraph, now I'm dying to know what happened.

As it turned out, I played a bit more. One of the computer players got Invention before me, nailed Leo's Workshop, and then I realized that I was about to take the pummeling of my life.

Let's just say I'm not turning this game in...

(However, I am right now playing a Prince-level game where I'm doing quite well, and then I'll try a King-level game. I probably should have done that in the first place... )

Best regards to all,

This is my frist time playing GOTM; i didn't even know it existed until a few days ago. This site and news of CIV3 has definitely renewed my addiction that started 8 or 9 years ago when me and my friends would play "hotseat" on CIVI (actually taking one country - and having each friend start off with one city)

WEll, batk to GOTM.I'm at 1 AD, and no has attacked me yet. I haven't had any countries step on my "American" soil. I guess the main reason is that I blocked off the south-eastern passage to the others. This type of strategy usually works well if you quickly make a declaration of peace and then retreat back a little until you could block them from ever trying to get past you without force.

Since this is an emperor game ( I almost never play King, Emperor, or Deity), the techs are extrremely slow, and I have managed to exchange knowledge alot by having a second unit wander around in foreign territory.

I think I'm doing OK; I can't tell what the other civs are doing. I have 11 cities (only 11!) and over 1-million +. I am the only civ with a wonder - the Pyramids - usually my second wonder behind the Collossus. Pyramids is the greatest wonder if you enjoy expanding very quickly.
:egypt:

I am a peaceful expansionist, but I did kill the Romans to the north very early in the game (roughly 3000BC); it was just too easy.
(As a side note: A few weeks back, I developed some kind of hatred for AI since I played my first "challenging" king game in 3 or 4 years/ some civ was nuking :nuke: me every single turn and I have never had any contact with them - i hate cleaning up pollution. Plus, all the other countries had all of these crazy pacts to contain my aggression - it's not my fault that they can't grow as big as me; I would buy their cities only after they would break their cease fires with me.)

I had a chariot from a hut, made peace, and then killed their # 2 city in 2 turns and the Romans were history. I don't enjoy sharing a continent.

The only annoying thing about this emperor game (besides the slow techs) is the barbarians. I didn't expect them show up in the middle of my map every couple of turns. I never played with Raging Hordes before; archers are a good attack and defense unit in the beginning for this onslaugh of barbarian activity. The activity, for now has ended in the middle since I went to explore every possible land space (most importantly the shore line). The barbarians are now coming by sea. i think if I send a trireme out to explore the coastline, the barbarians may become non-existent. I read somewhere that when all of the spaces are uncovered, the barbarians don't show up anymore.

I'm still at 1 AD, I think I'm still OK, I checked my demographics and it seems that I'm # 1 in almost everything except for military service. My plan right now is to expand and develop the "Western" hemisphere until I'm provoked to attack.

I guess my only tips are to go after the first 2 huts in your first few turns, be prepared for barbarian invaders, and block foreign expansion / invaders (in particular, the southeastern passage)

Good luck with your game, and wish me luck:goodjob:

This game is significantly different in many respects from a "standard" game, at least for me. The Small world and connected landmass have negated strong naval development, and will also strongly affect trade later on. Monarchy rules my 1 AD world... Republic is only coming on the horizon as some enemies are pounded into submission.

NOTES at 0001AD:

- The constant wars & barbs have caused a very militaristic game plan so far
- Empire underdeveloped, esp. Center & South; LOTS of barbs-slows growth, but units and gold
- Continious Barbs interrupt production, delay expansions S of SFransico, plus E of Antium & W of Chigago
- Expansion penalty (empire size unhappiness) began in 0400 BC (1st in Philly)
- 4 Size-1 Adv tribes (no hut saves or reloads, LOL); Killing Chicago
- 7 new Cities planned in next few turns, esp. South of Washington area (barb delay, made caravans instead)
- Monarchy is allowing lots of rednecking of the AI, and barb chasing LOL...
- Demanding and getting lots of tribute (gold and even some advances) from Civs
- Refusing Viking peace (up to 250g offers) to stop their expansion; Needling for war/tribute
- Not gifting and Map swapping on this small world; Will use force in this game
- Planning more Military assaults on Vikings and Romans
- Planning subversions of Egypt & maybe some Carth; plan to keep Alliance with Carth for now
- Not yet able to transition to Republic in heavy Military state (so avoid Republic Research for now)
- Doing bottom of chart science research, Rushing to Monothiesm
- Built Pyramids 1st to assist slow growth, because it looks like a long Monarchy
- So Far, no civs have yet attempted a wonder (to my knowledge)
- SSC (Philly) plans: Shakespeare, grow, get const(aquaduct); no settlers; set up routes with road bonus

Here is an Animated GIF (my first!) of the world so far (made with ULead GIF Animator 5). Thanks for the idea, Cornmaster!

by Becka:

I feel all sad and stupid, like a loser.
I'm NOT turning in this game of the month.

by el_kalkylus:

I feel stupid too. Everytime I start civ2 to finnish the game, I think of everyhing I COULD have done, and don't really feel like playing anymore. I am not turning this game in either....I am not even gonna finnish it.
You guys (and anyone else with such thoughts) have nothing to feel "stupid" about... If you play and have fun, then you win! :) And certainly no one thinks of a low-score game as "stupid", or such stuff. LOL, just look at the number of Civ players (even here in CivFanatics) that never play at all.

BTW, feel free to post and ask about specific things that might help your own game, too. Heck, make a timeline and let all GOTMers know how it went... a short one if just fine... it need not be as long/detailed as what you see me & some others post (I post tons of details to help everyone else see what happened, and why).

Hey Becka, with 3 cities, you can still likely launch a SS!!! Go for a minimum SS (15-1-1-1-1-1) if production/gold is limited, and then protect yourself. Remember, just surviving to 2020 at Emperor/Deity is a win, esp. if you are new to these difficulty levels!

And also... none of us were born knowing how to play Civ. ;) In effect, all our games are just culminations of what we learn along the way, and what we pick up from others (AKA experience).

:goodjob:

I see alot of u players not played civ2 at high levels!

what problem do u have at high levels? a very high rate of unhapyness. I normaly play at deity level, and eventinally I wil go toward democratie! But for most part of the game I stay in monarchy!

the problem with unhappyness can be solved, by expanding quick and agresive! my normal production in a the 1st city is warior and settlers untill they have to walk to far to the next spot where 2 build a city. I try 2 keep my city relative small, expect a few fortunad ones around a place with alot of rivers! in one of these city with the most river spots I build the colosus wonder and other things 2 bust the sience! and the city around them will totaly suport that city with caravans (to build wonders) and irigating and building roads! this is centre part of my empire, the main cities.

the rest of the empire will be designed to expand and to expand. with settlers and/or with war! if u have some free time in a city build oracle, or if u have enough trade arows adjust lux ratio to 20 or 30%. to prevent some unhappy ness

if u want 2 go 2 democracie build teh wonders what prevent unhappyness so that u citys can grow. what every u do don't build granary's /paramids the population will not be controlable

Im done. My SS landed in 1843.
This game was a great succes for me. I managed to get the world under control somewhat early, and was able to go demo as soon as I got Mike.
Trading was very profitable with numerous 1200+ deliveries, mostly from Oil and the odd uranium freight.
I never played Emperor before, but the reduced unhappiness from diety made expansion painless after Gardens(1st wonder).
I only had 56 cities, which I thought covered the whole world exept the poles. I am curious of the benefit of crowding the land with 70+ cities as some have done, I hate to have that much overlap.
