GOTM 91 - first spoiler, the Ancient Age

Reading Requirements:

  1. Must have contact with all AI civs remaining on your continent.
  2. Must be able to research a Middle Ages Technology.

Posting restrictions

  1. Feel free to discuss distant contacts and trades, but be discreet about locations or directions of any AI.
  2. No discussion of middle-ages (or later) including resource locations.
  3. AS ALWAYS, do not post Spoiler information for ANY other 'X'OTM contest.

I was afraid the current COTM game might give players a hard time, so this regent level PTW game should provide a nice respite. Is your game going well? What are your plans for the game and has the AI provided much to make you alter them?

The Romans decided to make a tech demand very early on which resulted in a war I was not prepared for. Luckily and to my surprise, they didn't send much and four archers was enough to hold them off until I could get peace. :)

The barbs were annoying. They kept killing my archer builds while I devoted everything to dealing with the Romans. I would have them contained soon enough though.

I don't care for the surrounding terrain too much but the location in general is pretty nice. As I entered the Middle Ages, I was in the beginning stages of a small offensive. :mischief:

At one time my gallic swordsmen lost 12 straight hit points against an unfortified spearman on grassland (not crossing a river.) My secondary school math is quite rusty, but I calculated the chance of this happening to 1 in 59605. Can anyone verify or correct this? I used the numbers 1/(0.4^12).

But that streak has in no way been symptomatic of the game. We set out to win with only gallic swordsmen and will surely succeed. But we're a long way from what I thought could be a BC win.

BUILD ORDERS: Warrior,warrior,warrior,granary(2750BC),

TECHNOLOGY (Starting with WC,CB): Mysticism - (Popped pottery) - (Traded BW from Germany in 2950) - (Popped Masonry in 2800) - (Popped wheel in 2590) - (Traded IW from Germany in 2590) - (Traded Alphabet from France in 1790) - Polytheism (1790) - (Traded Writing from France in 1700) - Horseback Riding (1425, popped) - Monarchy (1075) - Research off - (Traded Map Making from Carthage in 925) - ...

2950 - Met Germany.
1790 - Met France, who don't seem to know anyone else (very few techs.)
1725 - Met Rome while popping map.
1700 - Sold contact with Rome to the French, even though they have towns with just three
tiles in between them.
1075 - Revolt. Declined to trade Map Making from France.
1050 - Monarchy.
950 - Popped warrior.
900 - Rome declared.
730 - First Gaellic swordsmen.
710 - Met Japan and India.
690 - GA. This makes Mohács a 1-turn worker factory.

470 - Germany destroyed. Good: We don't want free feudalism circulating later on.

430 - We demand Carthage leave ex Germany. They don't, declare, and we get a leader. Rather than running thru the jungle trying to find something marginally better,
we build the FP in Leipzig.
370 - Give Monarchy to Arabia and France. War on Arabia.
310 - Worker factory cancelled at 30 workers.

150 BC - Arabia gone. We hand out Monarchy to Japan and India.

90 BC - Entered MA because of the Great Library in Rome. Everyone has exactly the same techs.

There was also a successful war with France and one with Carthage, in which a small number of GSs pinched 2-3 towns. The high price of the GS is evident. At the end of the GA in 290 BC I had only 28. At the end of the AA I had 28 too, the number slowly rising but dipping again after the costly conquest of Rome. But it's a great unit!

The Plan.
From the outset I decided to aim for a military victory. My basic plan was to scout, settle, build barracks and troops and then conquer. Little or no effort would be spared for city improvements (other than a few granaries and required barracks).

The Early Years
Entremont was founded in place and Alphabet was researched at max hoping to make contacts and trade for Pottery. Initially the Celtic scouting warriors made contact with Rome, France and Germany all by around 2000bc. Huts were popped for a warrior, a worker, maps and angry Kazak warriors….but no techs.

The First Roman War (1790bc – 1250bc)
Two Roman warriors were observed heading directly for Celtic territory and in 1790 Rome declares war with the said two warriors near to Entrmont. The war consisted of Rome sending isolated troops to their death, and also resulted in an early Roman GA. The Celtic empire continued to grow, knowledge was traded with Germany and France and in 1725bc it was known that both iron and horses were available.

The Celtic scouting warriors had already made contact with Arabia and Carthage when in 1325bc the Celts received their first MGL, Vercingetarix. Vercingetarix would be used to rush The Great Library and research would be turned off after the completion of the Republic and cash would be used to upgrade warriors to Gallic Swords. A temporary peace was agreed with Rome in 1250bc.

The Prelude to the Second Roman War
The Celtic scouts contact Japan and India and all Civs are now known. The Great Library is built in Richborough.

The Second Roman War (650bc -330bc)
This was a strike at the heart of Rome. The Celtic military still consisted of mainly archers but now some horsemen were beginning to join the frontline forces. In 570bc the Celtic Republic was formed, research was stopped and all money was diverted for military means. In 530bc Rome fell, but the Celts suffered heavy losses. Orgetorix, the 2nd MGL was used to rush the Forbidden Palace in Rome and a second core was started. The cities of Neapolis and Veii were destroyed and Pisae captured. The Romans were on their knees and Peace was agreed in 330bc.

The French War (310bc – 130bc)
In 310bc a Declaration of War was made with France and the Arabs agreed to a Military Alliance. The Celtic horsemen set upon the French with little resistance and when the Gallic Swords joined the fray in 250bc a Celtic GA was triggered and the French days were numbered. Chartres was razed, Tours and Rheims destroyed with Paris and Orleans captured. In 130bc the French forces were dispatched.

The German War (90bc - )
The Celtic forces were redeployed and in 90bc a Declaration of War was made against Germany. Again a MA was agreed with Arabia. Konigsberg, Berlin and Leipzig were captured while Munich and Frankfurt were destroyed. In 50ad the knowledge of construction is received from the Great Library and the Celts enter into Middle Ages. All remaining tribes still have to research Polytheism. Germany has two, one pop cities remaining.
