I have read about people that want to reseach fast always going Republic and then democracy. Why wouldn't people go monarchy in the beginging becuase it has the same labour percentage of 100% and is cheaper unit wise so your not always poor, so you would reseach just as fast, and later go fudilisum becuase it gives you 200% labour but costs population that you can grow back ??

Also if you have plain by a town with grain is it better to put a mine on the grain or irrigation ?

depends on what other terrain is in the city radius.... say the case was you had mountains/hills half and half with plains. Now, you can't irrigate mountains and hills so you mine them. And now that leaves you with the plains, irrigate them because you need someway of keeping up with the growth.

oh and also it depends if you are out of despotism by then.

I almost always Irrigate wheat on plains, even in despotism, especially in despotism, because in despotims that means 4 food.

I never go Republic in PTW/Vanilla anyway, so when I FINALLY get Conquests, if it is ever released in the UK, then it will still be Monarchy-Comunism. Though Fascism will be used to iradicate any pressing enemies near to me. Democracy only comes right at the end and even then I find it too expensive most of the time, even with the research slider to 0%.

On a side note, I would have liked to see theocracy, that was the only major government not represented in the game. I think I will mod conquests to get theocracy.

How about you disband some units then? ;)

Democracy is not about supporting a huge military, even if it can with enough infrastructure.

I tend to go for the monarchy/communism path myself. This is just because I still condisder Civ III to be a game of destroy the enemy. The only vicotory that I really like is one of me kicking the crap out of the computer. This being the case, the WW I get while in Rep/Dem is too much of a problem. Still though, there is no question that if you want to go the scientific rought then the quick path to Republic and then Democracy is obvious.

What about that new goverment that is 200% work eff, wouldn't that be a better choice for everything in the long run. It halfs your pop but it will grow back fast, and you would research / build 50% faster

Republic and Democracy give +1 gold per tile that already produces one gold. A roaded grasslands (not next to a river) gives 1 gold in most governments, but 2 gold in Rep or Demo. This "commerce bonus" is the principal advantage of the Rep / Demo governments -- lots more gold generated by citizens in your cities.

The worker rate you're focused on relates only to how quickly your workers (the units you move around the map) complete tasks such as mining, irrigation, roading, etc., and has nothing to do with the output of your citizens (the people in your cities that generate food, shields, and gold from the cities' local tiles), or with the speed with which your cities build city improvements.
