Government Changes

Howdy everyone,

I've been playing for some time and finally am getting my feet wet in the "regent" mode. Seems like i always have to stay on the Despot government because whenever i change to Monarchy i end up with negative money and then start losing any improvements to the city. Once i get the ability to change to Communism this problem usually goes away.

I have created a map where i have luxuries and resources in an island type of land connected to the mainland. I race the other civilizations to the island and try to sell luxuries to make money.

Is there an easier way to keep the money increasing so i don't lose my improvements? Seems i have to make most of my cities "wealth" cities to keep from going under. Which means i can keep about 5 or so cities always improving with improvements.

Any ideas or stragegies welcomed.

I had that problem when I wasn't as good as now.

First, don't switch from despotism for a while. Build your temples, libaries and marketplaces (important!!!). If you're fighting any early wars there isn't much need for to many units. Build roads as much as you can. Cities produce extra commerce on tiles that are roaded where person is working on.

The marketplaces pay up for the temple and other improvements, and if a bigger city will make some money for you. Also you will need around the optimum cities on the map or more.

I never switch to republic, because IMO its a bad government. No units support, corruption fighting is ok, but monarchy overall is better.

I would switch to monarchy late Ancient era, or Middle ages. Monarchy does not work too well if most of your cities are small.

Also don't put science up too high. Build libaries which will get it going faster.

Marketplaces are really important. And once you get banking build lots of banks.

You have found the slider on the domestic advisor screen, right? After you switch govs, go there and make sure you get a positive income if it is a problem for you. YOu make more money with markets and banks and roads but ultimately I found the answer to a potential deficit is being able to get the other civs to pay you.

I'm not God, but I have to say I usually go from despot to republic to democracy as fast as I can. The science is faster, and more work seems to get done. The faster science means you can trade away techs for luxuries, cash (often very big per turn cash is possible), other techs, alliances, whatever, which give you the leverage to run full bore research and call up allies for warmaking. The trick is to ask what they will give, it is usually more than you thought they would unless they are about to get the tech themselves anyway. And to trade only one tech away at a time and trade it to everybody you are comfortable giving it to (because if you trade it away to one they will probably profit by trading it to the others if you dont).

But when I was starting I had to rely on Monarchy and Communism, and I think alot of people do that because citizen happiness comes later in the learning curve.

If you are a religious civ, you can switch in and out of republic/dem for science and back to despot or communism relatively painlessly if you are mired in a long war or want to kill citizens to build quick harbors/airports/walls etc. in distant newly conquered regions.

Hope this helps.

In despotism your towns support four units, while in monarchy settlements below size 6 only support two units. You probably don't have enough cities to support your military, or they haven't grown large enough to support a considerable amount of units.

If you choose to switch to a republic, its important that you have a few luxuries, and a good number of happiness improvements built, to compensate for the loss of military police.

You generally want to get out of despotism fairly quickly (unless fighting an early war), just make sure you have a good amount of cities, and your core cities are nearing size 6.

I would also reccomend switching to republic, instead of monarchy for the extra gold. I have noticed that the extra gold counteracts any loss of money thru' units and even increases your treasury faster if you have enough roads and a few markets:goodjob:

If your going to be waging war regularily then Monarchy is generally better unless the wars are going to be short. Rebulic is best if you are going to be mostly peaceful...
