GR9 - Going for Space

Are we still planning to play as Spain? The only reason I ask is that Sirian and Sullla are using Isabella in their game as well.

My thought though is to try to grab an early religion first if I can.
Yeah, that would be cool, full blast research seems a viable option in cIV. But why not just post a start and see if we can just figure out the pro's and con's of the starting area?

@Renata: Yeah, I think it would be nice for the audience to see another leader in action. That rules Saladin out as well.

I already tried a start with Spain. I will print a Pic and see if you want to go for it. I did some practice games first. The AI always went for and got to Meditation right away and before we could with the Prince bonus.

I thus went for Polytheism, and we got it and have established Hinduism first.

Other than that I have built 2 warriors who are exploring.

So this is the picture. We can play it or not. I personally don't think playing the same civ is bad.

So questions:

Should we play this start? We have horses nearby, with 3 bonus resources in our city radius.

Is Settler the best build for next? Other options are worker, barracks, obilisk, stone henge (wait for Stone to the North?), warrior.

I went for hunting next as tech since we can build something for the Deer nearby (+1 health) We haven't researched anything yet though and can switch.

If we don't want to play Spain then what Civ do we want to play?

Picture (Too big for in thread- 1280x1024 or so)

as much as I would like to comment, I haven't got the game and have no clue what advise would be good. But, am I right, we have no worker yet?
Sorry but the new graphics aren't really use friendly IMHO.

Greebley, how is the game play so far generally?

The start is a lot slower. It is true we have no worker, but i only played 11 turns to get religion. I don't think we even have a tech that would allow the worker to do anything. I would play to 3000 BC if we are ok with the Spanish or 14 more turns. There was talk of wanting to start talk early. I just did the basics (get a religion, build 2 warriors).

Not sure if the Settler is best here. Maybe I should go for something else.

Can you post a picture using the goodies overlay (that's the little icom at the right bottom of the screen with the question mark, as I'm sure you know, but others might not)? We'll be able to comment more.

Not having the game myself either, not much to comment on; except, is that stone up by the mountain to the north? If so a settler to grab that early, then a worker, and research wheel (which I believe lets you build roads) to connect it up? Or would that take too long?

Going with Spain is ok with me. Maybe one more military unit before a settler? We don't want to get eaten by a bear. :)

I found the deer and the crabs, but what are the other two resources in our city radius?

@ eldar -- I think we don't actually need roads to work resources anymore, provided the resource is within the city's working radius. Instead, we need a pasture/hunting camp/fishing boat/whatever. We only need a road if the resource is within our cultural borders but outside any city's radius. So as Greebley says, what we'd need for the deer is Hunting.

Lurking a bit.

You need a trade route to connect resources. This can be a river, a coastline (with sailing tech I believe), a road, or any combination of them. So it's quite easy to hook things up.

I finished playing out to 3000 BC. Not a whole lot happened. I decided to grow to size 3 before building the Settler. We lost a Warrior to Lions in the West, while our Eastern Exploring Warrior is Healing from Leopards.

We got hunting and are going for the wheel. I figure we will build a worker after the settler.

We also met India who desires peace. Even an annoying Civ like ourselves.

I made a map and labeled the resources along with what techs since ppl are unlikely to be familiar with this.

===============================

My thought for the next town is to go for the stone. It doubles the speed of Stone Henge which seems a worthwhile wonder to try for (free obilisk in towns)

If anyone has the game, then post an I got it and then go and play.

I think I will have everyone play 10 turns even though the start is slow. That way everyone will get their fingers wet before anything real happens.
Right now every turn is 40 years so that means 2600, 2200, etc.

Also our state Religion is Hinduism. We were the first to discover it with polytheism. We haven't done anything with it yet - not sure there is much we can do this early.

I don't think TheRat has it yet. I haven't been able to install -- I've been crazy busy and have to go out again now. I'll take it next when I do have time, though, if no one else is able to.

I have the game too, but wont have time to play for a few hours. (just got got out of bed after playing till 11am.. grin. Last game I managed to found all 7 religions (on noble) :p )

Fingers crossed, mine should show up sometime next week.

Might I suggest Russia (the Philosophical + Expansionist leader)? Philo will be great for sci leaders to put academies in leading cities, not to mention half price unis, while expansionist gives cheap granaries (allowing your cities to grow sufficiently quickly without needing farms so much = more cottages = more commerce) and +2 health is like +2 happy for the whole civ in Civ3.

Failing all that, Cossacks are handy for all-purpose resource aquisition.
