For the first time, Rockstar has acknowledged claims regarding a fifth GTA game. Rumors have been circulating for years, but this is the first actual information on the matter. There is no real information, except that a trailer shall be released on November 2.

Rockstar announces GTA V, first trailer coming November 2

Confirming months of hearsay, Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have announced that the next installment of Grand Theft Auto is in the pipeline. The companies have posted a teaser page for the upcoming entry, aptly titled Grand Theft Auto V, but details are scant. As of writing, Rockstar's homepage displays the game's logo, which includes the Roman numeral "V" encircled by a banner with the word "Five."

It looks like what you'd expect to find on a bank note, but we're not sure what that means -- if anything. Wikipedia's GTA V entry claims the logo is stylized after British currency, but we haven't been able to confirm that (feel free to comment if you can say otherwise). If true, perhaps that implies the game will be based in England, which would be somewhat of a first for the series (the original had two London expansions).

That doesn't seem particularly farfetched considering GTA has been primarily developed in England. Rockstar North (formerly DMA Design), Rockstar Lincoln (formerly Tarantula Studios), and Rockstar Leeds (formerly Mobius Entertainment) are all British-based and have been responsible for producing virtually every GTA game, barring one Game Boy Advance title and the occasional help from US or Canadian studios.

Hopefully we'll know next Wednesday, November 2 when the company is expect to release the game's first trailer. Regardless of its setting, if past entries are any indication, GTA V will be one of the best-selling games of 2012 -- assuming it isn't poised for a holiday 2011 release. GTA has been a big earner, selling more than 114 million units since 1997. GTA IV and its expansions alone have sold over 28 million copies.

A vast majority of those sales are on consoles as the PC versions of GTA undoubtedly receive less development attention and they tend to feel wonky with a keyboard and mouse. In fact, starting with GTA III, PC versions have routinely received lower review scores. GTA IV in particular had lousy optimization issues at launch. Besides smooth gameplay, what do you hope Rockstar's latest addition will bring to the franchise?

Edit: Trailer is here:

Hopefully they will actually learn how to properly port a game in the first place and won't bundle it with a bunch of hassles like GFWL and Rockstar Social Place or whatever it was people kept complaining about. I was never able to finish San Andreas or Vice City because of the absolutely pathetic controls for flying things and didn't see the point in getting GTAIV when it had so many problems. Otherwise I will just stick with Saint's Row 3 which is looking to be pretty bloody awesome.

I always loved GTA but never finished the last one, finally got bored as every game seemed to just be the same thing in a different city. Hopefully this one does something a little different. London might be just what the franchise needs to liven things up.

I'll keep my ears open for news, but I still haven't gotten GTAIV because of the social club/online requirements. As a rule, I don't like computer programs interacting with the internet except at my command (like "download this update")..

It took me ages to get around the dumb Social Club with GTAIV, and once I did.. Hm.. The game was worth two playthroughs, but that is it. There couldn't be much variance made with it. I'd really like V to be like San Andreas more.

If they go with London then it'll be more like Vice City than anything else.

Is there a lot of crime in Seattle though?

I'd like to see it set in a European city, not that Seattle is bad (although most of my knowledge of it comes from Frasier) but North American cities are kind of dull and overused.

Same here.
Keep stupid crap outside the game and optionnal, thanks.

No, but I guess that's sorta a good thing.

Moscow, Shanghai or Tokyo are really good cities for a GTA game.

Tehran in 1979? I wish that Rockstar take notice to this. We would be better off with that instead of maybe another needless sequel of Red Dead Redemption (which the original will never be available for the PC).

Wherever it is I sure hope it is anything except SA and Vice City. I would love to see all the butthurt fanbois cry about it. Annoying small part of the fan base in the franchise. Deal with it! And move on!

Would love to see London, but with all the rumours going toward another American city is pretty much almost certain.

Before the game had been officially announced, there had been several minor leaks of supposed GTA production including websites, casting calls featuring GTA characters,[6] and an IGN editor who has said the next game will be released in 2012.[7] The first signs of the game went online in February 2011, via an actor's CV, which was followed by the discovery of Rockstar-registered GTA style URLs.[8] In March a number of casting calls for voice acting in a project codenamed Rush were leaked on the internet that were said to be for Rockstar, including a role as James Pederson, a minor character in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.[9][10]
In June 2011, sources allegedly close to the developer said the title is "well under way", with final touches like mini-games already being applied, and a 2012 release "pretty likely". "It's the big one," they also said of the game, noting that GTA V's scale is vast. Repeated rumours suggest the game will be set in real world Los Angeles

The only thing I care about is the story, the dark humour, and its rich characters. And I hope they will focus a great deal on that first, instead of appeasing to a small segment of the fan base that want more RPG elements in it like SA.
