Granting Independence to Colonies Triggers War... With EVERYONE

So I'm playing a game on monarch difficulty with a terra map and I'm the first player to grant independence to my colonies in the "New World" continent. Unfortunately, the moment that I enter the domestic advisor screen and click "liberate," I'm immediately at war - with every single AI in the game (with the exception of my vassal states). I have the game setting "aggressive AI" on, so everyone is at war most of the time anyway, but this same problem happened to me in a previous game and I had to endure a pointless war with all of the AI, previous friends an enemies alike. Is this a bug with the game? Or is this a problem that I should be able to avoid? Thanks.

yeah, I started this game right after downloading the most recent patch, for that exact reason. So I guess it didn't work...

What patch number? 3.17?

Check the version number on the about page of the main menu to make sure it is installed. If the patch is definitely installed then it's probably just a coincidence. All the AI's have declared war on me before on the same turn (some times through bribes, and sometime through the AP) - you are playing aggressive AI after all.

It sounds very fishy. Friendly civs don't declare war. They just don't. If the engine has decided that war with you is the only way to win, it finds a way to become PLEASED instead of FRIENDLY (be it through random events, close borders, or larger "you traded with our enemies!" penalties). But you should never get war declared on you by a FRIENDLY civ.

So, OP if any of those CIVs that declared war on you were FRIENDLY, I'd say it's either a bug or incorrectly installed patch.

IIRC AI can declare war on friendly if it had decided to declare it and started preparations before becoming friendly.

i have this bug too, the AI does not declare war on you, YOU declare on the AI, immediately after independence is granted. my first thought was that maybe the new vassal was inheriting the DoW from one of the dead civs. would make sense considering the other bug with regenerating civs that allows a new colony to inherit an extinct civs culture, which i discovered in the same game after my conquered Greek cities suddenly wanted to join the new colony of France.

I thought there were like 5 AIs that will declare at friendly. I am thinking Ragnar and Monty were the top 2 most likely. The pleased before friendly rule applies to those who dont declare war at friendly.

I've never had a friendly declare. Not monty, not ragnar, not shaka, no one. Even when their power rating was higher.

Yeah that sounds exactly like the Colony Bug. Check that you have the latest patch. You can find it from one of the stickied threads at the top of this forum. Even if you think you installed it, something may have gone wrong. Load up Civ and go to "Advanced" then "About this build" and check the version number is 317.

Hmm - I'm seeing something very similar. When one of the civs who's friendly to me creates a colony all other civs declare on me (including two other friendly civs who are war allies with me). Given the history of bugs triggered by colony founding, I'm very suspicious about this.

This is definitely 3.17 - the build number checks out, and I'm seeing the documented changes of 3.17 in game.
