With the help of Aronk and others, I was able to determine that my wacky in-game graphics experiences were due to my poor integrated video card's memory capabilities.
But what, as the title of this thread inquires, governs the specifics of these malfunctions? Why is the right hand side of my screen messed to the enth degree while the other is... at least, recognizable? See for yourself:
