I have been playing Civ for a looong time and as it has evolved it has gotten more demanding on my PC. My latest PC is no slouch but I found with Civ V on Huge maps it was really straining, pushing close to 80C on my GPU temp widget.
Recently I was blowing the dust out of the PC when I accidentally broke off a fan blade on my GTX560's cooling unit...ouch! So that was a good excuse to buy an aftermarket cooler with twin fans. I chose an Arctic brand unit I got on Amazon for about $40 and installed it in about an hour and a half, including adhesive curing time.
The results were amazing...my GPU core temp while playing these huge maps went from the mid to high 70's down to the 40's and 50's degrees C. I can't recommend this sort of upgrade enough, for those of you who's PC's may be straining, but perhaps are not in the market for a new graphics card just yet.
