graphics: NO to groups of soldiers on map- ONE figure like CIV 3 PLEASE!

I think multi units are the best choice too, instead of a health bar. Really spectacular.

I just hope the mod creator will take the credits for it by firaxis.

well, it seems the community is split over this issue. And if I am not totally wrong, quite a number of experienced players favor single units. This might be the mere fact, that in the long run ease of play counts, not beauty.

I never had a problem with the health bar, it's pretty easy to read. And the color indication of green, yellow and red was a great tool too. Now, how are they going to implement this? I haven't seen any screenie this way.

I mean how are you supposed to know what would be the strength of that unit in a fully healed state? Or are they always the same with no more promotions based on health? That would be bad IMHO. I thought that was a strategy that distinguished level of play. For example, use of regular units versus veterans showed some kind of experience and knowledge of the game.

Multi-units have another decisive disadvantage!

How would you mod the hitpoints now? In Civ 3 it was easy to raise the max hitpoints to 9 for elites (+1 for unique units, so the absolute max was 10).
How would you do the same thing in Civ4? Have multi-units of 10 crowding one tile? Even worse - how to pick a certain unit then, when you have multi-units of 10 to the left, the right, in front and behind?

How does this match with "easy moddability"?

I would at least want to have the chance to switch back to single-units with health bars. There is no added value in multi-units.

Another thing I don't like about the multi-unit is that they are just 3 guys all copied and pasted standing together in a group. It just looks like a terrible copy and paste job. I understand that when a battle takes place, they animate and fight and that does look pretty cool but having armies around the map that look the way they do is a MAJOR distraction when looking at the map. Your eye can't help but catch those armies all over the map. And they look like ****.

My first thought when I saw the multi-units was that the map is going to look very crowded - how am I going to sort through them all?

There are screenshots of ships- one figure.

And why on earth would you think that because they used 3 units this indicates they think a phalanx is comprised of 3 people? What kind of freaky reasoning is that? :crazyeye:

agree :crazyeye:

what would be great, (but we will not see it in civ4?),
Is to have the number of soldiers in each unit selectable when you produce it. for example, you could produce a warrior with only 1000 soldiers (1 health bar, or 6000 soldiers, 6 health bars, and with the attached appropriate cost.

but that is basicly the same as free grouping, that I also miss, (grouping 1000 warriors with 2000 swordmen and 2000 archers, then multi unit representation would have a solid meaning. 1 soldier on screen for every 1000 troops of a kind.

Would add loads of realism 2 the combat system as well, combining your armies tactically.

I think it would be useful If Health is expensive to repair. So 'healing hp' is like replacing a unit just a bit cheaper (possibly coming out of your $ like unit maintenance and upgrades do in Civ3).. possibly including things like No field repair, etc. (ie a barracks could allow units to repair within a range of the city)

These would mean that health is more than just an in battle thing, it would tend to carry over more, and repairing a unit might not be preferable to replacing it if the unit was far out in the field.

Ohh, I just looked at some screenshots and I dont like what I see at all. It looks very cartoony, and I dont like how huge the units look compared to the cities etc.

But anyway, someone said about modding it up to 10 health, thats still possible as far as I can see. There is obviously a limit of 5 units per 'group', so if each of them has 2 health, or takes 2 attacks to kill or whatnot, then there is your 10 HP.
