Great Generals NOT Appearing

I just got Warlords, and have noticed that the Great Generals xp bar (in the military screen) never goes up no matter how many xp I get - It stays at zero. I have started a few games, and it's the same thing every time.

The only thing I can think of is that the I haven't fought against another civ, only against barbarians.

Can anyone please help me with this? Thanks.

Your intuition was right : you gain GGxp exclusively by fighting other civs, animals and barbarians grant none.

I guess the point is to avoid a player letting a barbarian city alive, or a piece of fog, just in order to get a great general prior to an actual war, which would be too easy.
