Do great leaders have a chance to not succeed on attempts to research a new technology? Many times I have chosen the get a new technology route and not gotten it. Drives me absolutely nuts cause it's a huge waste.

Great people, when you use them to "bulb" a technology, just give you a fixed amount of beakers towards this technology (the bigger your empire and the higher the amount of beaker, with a fixed basis; great scientists have a higher fixed basis). So, sometimes the number of beakers is enough to get you the technology instantly, sometimes it is not, in which case you have to finish to discover the tech by yourself.

Ahhhh ok.. did not realize that. I asume that those beakers/progres stay there until you finish your current tech or do you have to switch right away?

They will wear down slowly with time but it isn't urgent, though you kind of waste the entire point of the bulb if you don't get the tech extra fast.

Actually, I am pretty sure that is not the case, I seem to remember a discussion about building decay where it was mentioned that beakers do not decay.

If you hover over the bulb I think, if you won't get the tech right away, it will tell you how many beakers the guy will give you towards it. If you then go and calculate what you need to get it you can tell if it's worth it or not. Or at least worth it to you.

(same goes for engineers and buildings)

Hmmm, really? I think I recall a game where I got some beakers for Divine Right for free from some ruins, and when I checked it out later (much later :p ) it had no excess beakers. Suppose I could be mistaken though.
