Great Library?

I'll keep you posted! :)
Probably wont get around to test it until tomorrow or Sunday though, because of my job and all the work piling up here.

Did you try the Civ3 Multi-Tool? IIRC it should work for Conquests too.

Yeah, I have tried it, but I got some error message, cannot remember what it was.

(Don't work to hard ;))

I've read Ision's article, and I still go for the GL on Emperor. I can get it 95% of the time before anyone else. The trick is to improve around the capital which should be on a river, not sell it, and only if demanded, will I give it to someone. All the money I save not researching and being on tech parity with everyone it most important to me. I end up with 2k-3k gold until it's done. Once it becomes obsolete, I have built libraries and can resume researching with parity. I still expand, but I use other cities to makes settlers. Since the AI civs don't go the Literature or Horseback route, those are the ones I shoot for. Those civs that start out with Alphabet have a huge advantage since they can research Writing immmediately at only 10-20%, saving a ton of money and sometimes a SGL can be produced since you are the first to research the tech.

BTW, a added strategy with the Great Library is described in http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=81424 by SirPleb in his Sid HOF game. If you build it, then before you get education with it you give it to another (weak?) civ. Then when you see rail road appearing, you take it back. No reaserch required from Liturature to rail road! Even more of an exploit, but <shrug> ;)

Normally I make a beeline for Chivalry, and stop researching once I get it. Then i'll just build knights/other knight UU thing, and attack when the time is right :)

In my present game, I got catapulted from having 3 techs in the medieval age, to having Nationalism and Communism in the Industrial age :) -- the only tech I didn't get from the Medieval age was Music Theory, no idea why (as more than 2 civs already had it)

I use this tactic in all of my games.

Strange. The exact same thing happened to me. A bug I wonder?

Why u research for Chivalry? Most likely AI will get that before education.

One thing I haven't seen discussed much is the fact the the GL is less valuable in C3C since they moved the ability to trade "Contact with ..." from Writing to Printing Press. It makes it a lot harder to meet other Civs during the era in which the GL will help you, particularly if you're on an archipeligo map.

Wasn't that on Deity? Charis won like that once.

I once was playing on Emperor level and was the Ottomans. My nearest neighbor was the Babylonians. I had a terrible time trying to trade for techs (the AI would not accept anything reasonable, not even gpt). I tried to build the GL but the Babylonians beat me to it.

I raised and army of weak units and declared war. I took their capital and the GL and was instantly brought up to speed on techs the next turn. Turn conquest + 2 the city culture flipped back to Babylon.

I beelined for my UU which happens to be in the non-Education track. When I retook the city, I got all the techs up through (and including) 3 industrial age techs!

Betazed also played another one before that, but failed when the Babylonians suddenly decided to have a little fun. I tried one on Monarch - but, as luck would have it, I was next to Germany. Needless to say, I was dead before I founded my fifth city.

Sell your closest AI buddy the tech, then once they've built it, capture it from them.

Buildings wonders is a waste of time, and should be left to the AI. You've got an army to build :D

This is great!

There is a caveat though, if the map is large you might not be able to do that.
