I'm playing with both Warlords and BTS installed and I've gotten very attached to the Great Wall. I spent 3 hours yesterday regenerating the map trying to find a starting location with stone so I could build it the Great Wall before someone else did. The Barbarians not being able to enter your borders is a great plus. In the game I was playing last night I loved it since the barbs were everywhere keeping the other civs busy while I happily developed to my hearts content. I didn't have raging barbs one and they were everywhere.

I thought about playing with raging barbs and deploying the same tactic. Just build the Great Wall ASAFP and let the other civs deal with the barbs. Has anyone else used this tactic? The one downside I see is getting behind the civs for a bit trying to develop masonry really ast and building the wall but it pays off not having the barbs bother me.

Last night I watched 4 other civs trying very hard to fight off barbs WITHOUT raging barbs on. I might try it tonight and see how it goes. The thing I worry about is not being able to build the wall before the raging starts.

If you get lucky you might even get the Barb Spearmen event after you build the GW. The closest civ will get demolished by the spearmen and then you just invade them with axemen if they aren't destroyed already.

And that of course made GW even better on BtS... there might even be a yummy, empty barb stolen capital for your warrior to pick up (i've seen barbs leave the capital they conquered without any garrison).

I'm going to try it out tonight. Last night with regular barbs they were everywhere, I can't wait to see how crazy it will be for the other civs with raging barbs.

What map are playing on? I don't think there is really need to regenerate map, as i can almost always pick up the GW (BtS) if i want to. Just research the stuff you need for food & such, masonry & start building GW while researching BW after building worker/extra warrior, maybe even a settler depending the map situation and then build the GW aided w/ few chops. There's often even time for stonehenge. GW + SH (if not creative) will make your expansion really easy when AI's will be harassed by the barbs. Don't neglect your military completely though! :)

Well it's kinda different thing to build GW on archipelago VS. pangaea and i was also thinking about the amount of forests you have in capital FC. I think i usually only chop 1-2 for GW anyway.

I usually play on a map with continents with a lot of AI civs, just for the fun of lots of civs around. I rush so fast to get masonry and a quary built that i don't have bronze working to chop trees. I play with 18 civs so i have to build the GW ASAP or someone else does lol. With that many civs i usually wind up with 2 to 4 civs on my continent. When the barbs start invading I like to sit back and watch and say "not my problem" lol.

I wish the other civs could ask for help when the barbs start invading and the answer if you have the GW should be "Not my problem" lol

Ah, number of civs of course make difference. I usually play normal amount of opponents. If i decide i want GW right i away generally tech whatever is needed for food, mining or masonry (start building the gw soon after acquiring it) depending what i start with and then tech BW while worker puts up mines on hill(s) without forest(s)/or quarry/road if possible and then possibly mines forested hill and chops forest or two (food resources pastured/farmed first).

With raging barbs you will still have lot's of time for expansion while AI's struggle with them.

Yeah, I've done raging barbarians plus the great wall, and it is kind of fun, particularly on a big pangea. The problem, though, is that there is a limited amount of experience your troops can get from fighting barbs.

Isn't the point of the GW that you don't have to battle barbs. Are you thinking of Civ3 where it doubled Attack Vs. Barbs?

I got Mecca this way over the weekend. Darn nice of them. ;)

What follows is only really a semi-spoiler (I have seen it elsewhere around here), but I will tag it anyway:

Spoiler :
The Barb Uprisings won't attack your units in the field. They just bee line for cities. So you simply follow them along as they approach one of your enemies, and you can sometimes pick up a free/cheap city that way.

Ditto "Angkor Utrecht" (playing as the Khmer and capturing a Dutch city from the barbs because Willem wasn't really in a position the entire game to REX). I built the Hermitage in it and they piped down after a while. Mind you even with the GW you usually have to make sure the surroundings of where you want to settle next are barbarian-free and I've made that mistake once too many times to assume anything, so with a couple of roving axemen around your frontier you could probably unlock the HE asap.

I've done this once before but I like doing it on land maps rather than continental/water maps. Limited XP from barbs is an issue but I find my XP from the barbarians comes from invading their cities and then using them as forts to expand from or to destroy my AI enemies. The last time I played it a squabble over Jute led to non-stop world war between me (as Germany) and the Holy Roman Empire, spreading thence to the Netherlands, Zululand, Rome... :). The war began at macemen and ended at infantry. Fantastic game though at Chieftain level so I'd want to be a bit better at Warlord before trying it out now.

GW is good to have but it does not stop barb galleys pillaging your sea resources!!! I assume on raging barbs you need more galleys too?

Not more galleys, more triremes (bonuses against galleys).
