Great Works and Artifacts - max number, and how to "lose" one of them

Can't find an answer around here.

If I have the maximum possible number of great works and/or artifacts, is it possible to just "drop" one of the existing one, in order to let a great person or an archaeologist to obtain a new one?
It could be useful if I am looking for a particular themeing bonus.

It could be nice if I could "drop" one (losing it, throwing it away, destroying it), or "gift" to another leader (just to free one space).

There is no mechanic to get rid of a GW (other than trading, which sometimes helps with theming bonuses, but doesn't open up a slot). You can't even sell a building that has a GW in it (which would be an indirect way of destroying a GW).
