My greatest has to be without a doubt the one I'm playing right now as the Maya. Huge archipelago(random everything except barbs, forgot) Capitol City was with Lots of plains on a river with some floodplains and five- count 'em FIVE cows in the city radius.
I'm crushing the AI at everything and i have like 4 or five wonders in the city getting another every 20 turns or so. I'm at school right now, so I'll post a screenshot when I get home. :goodjob:
Edit: 6 cows. I counted wrong :D

I had a similar one once... it was on a coast AND a river with floodplains, two fish and two wheat in the radius (now cows though, booooo) after the first cultural expansion. The only thing I'd want to make it better would be some mountains with gold to get the extra shields and commerce. oh well

I once had a city with 6 wheat inside the city radius and another three outside it.

I've seen a grouping of nine cows before (on a random map - otherwise, wouldn't be that impressive :) )

The starting location for the chinese in Teturkhan's Test of Time is awesome...all that silk...

I've never really understood this thing about getting floodplains in your start-up city. OK, it's great for growth but you get no production from them, and horrendous disease problems (the last time I had a floodplain start, it took ages before I could -potentially - build a settler, because as soon as the city hit size 3 it got diseased down to size 1, and this cycle repeated several times until I gave up and started a new game  )

So I hate floodplain starts...

I'd have to agree with tweedledum. Flood plains are bad,but i dont mind running into them later near my smaller cities, since they have no effect after sanitization (I know that may be wrong so dont worry about correcting me on it). I prefer to start on grasslands, because they can have a bonus giving more shields, and they still may have cows and rivers. One time I started on nothing but tundra, and that didnt work too well either.

What I love is grasland in the inner radius and hills / mountains in outer circle. I played as France an had starting pos. like this. My production was enormous!

I've had cows, floodplain and wines in abundance just around my capitol. AND a village 3 squares away that turned into another city. That was great.

Floodplains are great as long as you have them in moderation. I've never had disease from floodplains when less than two tiles within the city radius are floodplain.

It was a very impressive start loc I once had, but it was on an island. I had desert and lots of hills and rolling grasslands. And in the desert were ELEVEN incense! On one little island! Almost a quarter of the whole island was incense!

In my current game I had my best start ever with Conquests. I started this game warily even though I had the two wheat on floodplains, and lots of hill/mountain, because it would take forever to make really productive. I explored a little down south and found the 4 Gems so I decided to stick with it. (BTW I found three more Gems down south and all within reach) Then when I discovered Iron working I was totall in awe. I had three resources all within reach of my growing empire. This has never happened before with Conquests, since there is so much less of a chance to get resources.

Want a nice start? Here's a screenshot I posted in the un-official SOTD thread a while back. Count the cows. Plus everything else.

Cool, not to get off topic but thats Conquest? The Graphics Look Great. I just got Civ3 Gold Edition. That game looks Great.

Sorry to burst your bubbles kiddo, but thats not the actual graphics... Its a graphic mod, which I dont even know where to find... Its called the water color mod I think, I just dont know where to get it...

Have a good long look in this forum. Both of those screenshots show Snoopy's terrain, which shouldn't be too hard to find, while mine has a few other modifications which can also be found therein.

Although this may not be the "perfect" start, I believe it'd be a damn beautiful city to live in. Had I kept the forests there, it'd be a replica of Rivendell!

I have a screen shot at home, but the upload wouldn't work, in which there's approximately 10 hexes on the river, including the main city for starters. Two of the non-river hexes were tobacco. That left one mountain and the rest as grass. 12 of the grass hexes were with shields with approximately six of those hexes by the river. I've maybe had better cities through random generation before, but for a guy who won't start without a minimum of six potential shield hexes this was very good.

Sorry it took a while, but here's the shot. I love it. I'm doing great. :king:
