I came accross this little gem when surfing www.firingsquad.com :
http://firingsquad.gamers.com/news/newsarticle.asp?searchid=4362
Law Number 3037, enacted at the end of July, explicitly forbids electronic games with 'electronic mechanisms and software' from public and private places, and people have already been fined tens of thousands of euros for playing or owning games.

Internet cafes are allowed to continue to operate, providing all gaming is prohibited: if a client is found to be running any sort of game, including online chess, the café owner will be fined and the place closed. The law applies equally to visitors from abroad: "If you know these things are banned, you should not bring them in," said the commercial attaché at the Greek Embassy in London -- who declined to give her name.

Absolutely crazy! Isn't Poly located over there? :D

Oh dear. What could games possibly do to have themselves illegalified (yes its a word).

I mean, I go to bed after being exposed to hours of ionizing computer radiation, only to have reoccuring thoughts of games. I think I look like catherine the great. I dream of being shoved in the arse of a cow to feel like I am being transported in an overlord from Starcraft. Counterstrike gives me reoccuring thoughts of killing hostiges. SMAC provides me with endless thoughts on the subject of fungus control.

Despite all these things, I AM ALRIGHT.....

What the bloody **** is this??? can this be confirmed anywhere else??? Is it actually within the boundaries of the government??? What were they thinking???

Those poor Greek children and teens. :( We MUST airlift computer games to the good girls and boys of Greece IMMEDIATELY! It'll be like the Berlin airlift and the Greek authorities will try to bring down our aircraft with anything from spotlights to plain AA missiles, but we must do this for the children!

OMFG! Apolyton might be located in Greece! NOO!!!!! Curse those Greek authorities! After we airlift, we'll fly bombers over their parliment to bomb them.

I can just see a guy in a black trenchcoat full of computer games walking the streets of Athens...

"Psst. Kid. You want a copy of Super Mario? Okay...that'll be 80 drachma..."

Actually, there have been protests to this legislation, saying that it is far too invading of personal freedoms for a democratic state.

I don't think it's false information. But from what I've read it seems like they made a mistake in the wording of the law that originally should just prohibit online gambling.

Whoa, why should any of this be banned??? It's completely authoritarian

Take out the Greek Government:tank: :mwaha: :mwaha:

It apparently was meant to prevent illegal gambling, but when authorities admitted they wouldn't be able to distinguish between such things, the government supported a blanket law.

It seems like it's the real deal, and not mistranslated, and that they will actually prosecute such cases. Absolutely ridiculous!!!

Holy crap, I was thinking of going to Greece on vacation next summer, but not anymore! Hey! Can somebody find a site for the organization in Greece lobbying (there's always one) the government to get rid of this awful, draconic, oppressive law? ....Hey think about this scenario! an entire generation of kids and teenagers with no games of any kind!...what would they possibly do in their free time!!!???

i just it read in humor forum, posted by portuguese, holy crap, no game?

and they are part of eu?

Boycott Greece in '02. :crazyeye:

I'm floored. Absolutely incredible. I cannot believe that a democratic country could pull something like this. I can't imagine the people just taking this quietly. What an astoundingly totalitarian thing to do!

I cannot believe that any country would be stupid enough to do something this... er... stupid.
