I'm sure this is an old problem, though any work around has escaped me. I just got the tech for Hemmah, but my allie keeps getting to start building him before I can. I've reloaded 5 times, but always the same result, some city has him in production before I can get to one of my own to start it.

Considering using world builder to pop him, but not sure if that will affect my score. :(

Well, if you're going to be using world builder to cheat, I don't think you should be worrying too much about your score. It's legitimacy would already be in question at that point.

As for heroes, about all you can do is beeline for the required tech earlier and then make sure you've got a good production city prepped to get the hero out ASAP. That or don't encourage others to follow your religion. Or are you following their's? Either way can lead to the situation you're in.
One other thing that might work could be the command promotions on priest type units or domination with archmage. I don't actually know if those would work on a hero or not as I'm rarely in this situation. I did once try to get Mardero with command, but I think demons might be specifically immune to it. This would also require you to war on your allies which might not be the best strategic move.

Command only works on living units. Since Mardero is a demon, he is not alive.

Perhaps I didn't explain the sitution quite as well as intended. You see, it's not another player, it is my computer permant allie. I have no option to out tech them, they share my techs. Can't declare war and try to steal him, their my ALLIES. Besides, why try to use command in this instance? Just capture or raze the constructing city if it was some other computer. Beyond these small matters, my use of world builder. I don't use it in games, but how else can I stop the computer from cheating in this instance?

The computer allie AI is starting construction before I have access to my cities. Period. I've reloaded over 10 times, the only effect being the comp switches which city it builds in. So kindly don't call my legitimacy into question before you acuratly consider all the factors involved.

I hadn't actually read the first post when I responded to the second.

Yeah, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I really wish the game would not stop you from working on world wonders/units just because a team mate it doing so. They tend to build things in stupid places, meaning rivals will finish before they do even though you could have finished far earlier.

When I have time, I'll see if I can find the part of the code that deals with this and change it for my modmod.

When I play with a Permanent Ally, I try to make sure we are not of the same religion. The religion diplomatic bonus doesn't matter anyway, since a permanent ally with a -100 diplomacy towards you will treat you better than any non-ally. Having a different religion could mean that the ally gets along better with different rivals, which at least in Multiplayer games could be a diplomatic advantage (but an AI with a permanent ally doesn't do diplomacy, and I've never actually played Multiplayer to test this). Unfortunately, you can't ask your ally to change to a different religion, but you can spread other religions to all thier cities and hope they convert.

Aye, it's quite exasperating at times. Even in that game, the computer cities were mostly going to need 40+ turns for Hemmah. While there was a prepared capital in my empire that could pop him in 15.

Shouldn't be too hard to pull a sneaky tactic and flip to my true religion after alliance. Though it's annoying to have to do it that way because of this old glitch. Vanillia defect I suppose we could say. ;) Can't speak for multiplayer, but in single the ai gets just as psychotic even if they like my allie. Probably a vassal issue, by that time usually not many free empires left running around. :mischief:

That problem is easily fixed: one turn before you finish the tech that enables the hero/wonder switch to another tech and let your AI "ally" finish it. He will finish the tech after his turn, right before your turn. That way you are able to start building the hero/wonder first.
