Grid Mode While In Game

Click Main Menu - (that's the little triangle on the upper left corner of the map)

Same here, although Civ 3 is a lot easier without them than Civ 2. Without grid lines in Civ 2, I was always moving the wrong direction.
 
CTRL-G is your friend. I usually play with grid lines off but I'll switch them on when planning for city placement or a military strike. With that key command you can switch them on and off at will as the situation merits.
 
I always use the gridlines because they help me approximate distances, and those all too common land jutts into the ocean are actually land or bits of land that is water.

Sorry if that's confusing.
 
I've played the game so long I can count the tiles and visualize city radii with the grid off....
 
You can also turn them on/off under preferences i think also
 
I can't judge distances or directions without them. :sad:
