guarding territory lines

King, There is no sure way to keep them off your patch, but i would just let them roam because they can not settle, also if they do attack the ai is pretty poor on a sneak attack. One method I have found is to threat war via diplomacy if they do not leave your patch, it works very well if you are much more stronger than the trepassing nation, but you may need to nag them more than twice.

Best o luck , tell us how it goes.

^doesn't work with my main rival/enemy-that i've warred with 5 times...he just says i do what i want

Create archers and spearman/horseman or what ever your best troop is. The more troops you have (and the better those troops are) the more respect the AI shows you. Of course creating those troops needs to be balanced with expanding. Often you need troops though just to keep the peace. If I manage enough troops the AI generally leaves me alone and declares war on other AI instead.

One way is to have a fortress every 3rd square of your border (ie 2 squares between each fortress), with a fortified fast moving unit and a defender. When an enemy unit tries to pass, the fast moving unit can get an attack of opportunity, damaging the trespasser by 1 point. Once they're inside your borders, you can mobilise those units and take them out. Obviously this is only for war-time, but when else will you get enemy units moving in? Only other time I've had units enter my territory was when they are trying to get a Settler through to some little corner on the other side.

I believe i have heard this from someone else. If you build fortress along their border and put your best units along it. Then you can declare war on them and they will just crash along your border and then you can sweep up the excess and kill them. Helps if you are on a peninsula and have a good navy

I want them off my land for two reasons-
the one that keeps entering is a backstabber and have embargos against me-and I want to fortify to be able to advance safely-my main enemy is on my border and arabia has a city right in the center of my country..I'm thinking of raiding them sometime..

Just ask them to leave every time they enter your territory... they'll declare war and you can clean them up once and for all.

I did that in CotM12. The Russians were getting pushy, so I put up a wall of muskets (later upgrade to rifles, then infantry) along the border. It really helped in that the border was mostly mountainous.

The Russians did declare war eventually, but I was ready for 'em.

Last game, I built a line of infantry, on the huge world map, fifty units long with forts and rail on every square. It was costly and time consuming to create, but once it was up, it cost only 50 gpt to maintain, and when the line starts moving forward, it just eats up everything, no need to worry about those pesky counter attacks or keeping any units at all to defend cities behind the line. With a good amount of art. behind the line and cav/tanks infront, it worked pretty good despite the seeming rediculousness of the project when it was about half way finished. Really good for large-scale-strategic flanking.

I tend to ignore this. If you ask them to get out or declare they will as often declare as not, unless you are significantly stronger, the undesired war that results is often a pain in the a**. They will tend to be on their way to...
1) Settle unused tiles on other side of your land
2) Attack a barbarian hut
3) Attack a different civ on other side of your land
4) They may actually be going after you (they will march up to the city they consider weakest then declare and attack with whatever units are there at the time).

You can ignore them if the first 3 of these is the case. Keep a number of units following them and fortify in any cities they pass to bolster your defences in case they intend an attack. This is less expensive in terms of military upkeep than having a maginot-line border.

If you really want to get them out tell them to leave or declare (this can take 2/3 turns to appear instead of a polite request, which they will tend to ignore) and be prepared to overwhelm the trespassing units in case they do declare. If they want a war it is often best to let them through and declare on you since their attacking is awful, and you will be able to catch and destroy a significant part of their offensive forces on your own land, particularly if you have fast units or rails and cannon/artillery. Remember that the initial attack is always the worst they can throw at you, since this is made up of all the units the AI has been building up in peacetime, after they are dead the AI goes into 'trickle' mode and throws units at you in 1s and 2s as fast as it can build them, this is easy to defend against and is a good time to counter-attack.

Last night I was sitting peacefully on MY French continent with my modern armor, bombers, etc, when Hiawatha decided to drop off a single regular warrior  from a galley. After asking him to leave 3 times, he declared and this single warrior attacked one of my cities.

I know you're correct, brennan, about most attacks, but this one was terribly amusing.

lol

The AI's D-day landings are probably the thing it is worst at. And that's BAD

"Grah! I am Killer AI from across the oceans, watch while I land 4 units on your land every 10 years, fear me little human..." ;)

This is only scary if you are on Pikes and they land MA...

If you've got a border of at least 10 tiles, build a maginot line of units, but leave one tile open. the AI will run towards the opening. before it gets to the opening, close it and open a tile on the other end.

It works especially well in BS archipelago (huge) with armies. ;)
