Is ther e a guide somewhere, of what government to use? I can never quite decide. For instance I am now concerned, over whether I should use monarchy or communism. I am a democracy now, but I am going to go to war.

FWIW I have been able to stay at war quite a long time in a republic, without any war weariness problems. This only works if I can get the AI to declare the war. If I declare war, I have weariness problems pretty quickly. It's funny, but I think my people like war in a republic as long as the AI declares it. I have seen my civ go into multiple WTLKD when the AI declares and I win the first battle and then seen all those WTLKD's end when I brokered peace just 4 or 5 turns later.

If you have the tech for Communism, don't bother with Monarchy. Communism is better in every respect. Corruption is much lower, unit support is the same (I think), martial law works better, and you get a bonus in your espionage.

That said, it is certainly feasible that a large scale war be conducted in a Republic, or even a Democracy. It helps considerably if you lure the enemy into striking first, though. This actually reduces war weariness and buys you a few more turns before your cities become unmanagable. The people are also less likely to riot if you're winning.

Communism, unless you plan on rushing some stuff. If you plan on rushing, i'd go to Monarchy. Like i was in a war, but i saw some coal in a spot in the jungle that nobody reached, Only problem was that i needed to get some culture quickly, so i went to monarchy and then switched back to Communism. Thats why i like Religious civs, Gov switching is so easy.

i think that republic is a good governement has less war weariness than that of democracy and less corruption than that of communism or monachy

For what it's worth, my plan depends on the style of game I'm planning on playing.

In my present game, as Japan, I'm having a really 'military' game, so I beelined for monarchy, and picked up Republic through a peace treaty. I'll probably beeline for Communism when I can, and try to pick up Democracy through trade or conquest.

In my last game, which I played peacefully, I beelined for Republic, and, later, Democracy, and picked up Communism and Monarchy through trades.

If I'm in Republic, I tend to try to replace with Democracy when I can.

Likewise, if I'm in Monarchy, I try to replace it with Communism when I can.

In your specific case, go to communism - I can't, off the top of my head at least, think of any great advantages of Monarchy over Communism.

The only advantage (which I forgot about above and Furry S. pointed out) to Monarchy is that you rush production with gold in Monarchy and with population in Communism.

Communism - be careful. Don't just get the tech and switch. Communism is made for an industrial civ. For unit support to be 8 you need to have a metropolis, so you need hospitals. You need an extensive rail network, and you also need courthouses and police stations whereever possible. The pop rushing is not a bad thing as long as you plan your empire to that end. Communism comes into it's own when developing newly captured cities. The first temple is done in 10-15 turns rather than 60 (small towns). Often, you don't even need to rush them.

Republic is a great war government, and you can stay at war for the whole game if the other civ declared war.

For government choices, I would suggest some criteria to choose gov'ts:

Go for monarchy if your cities are fairly close together and low corruption in democarcy. Monarchy decides corruption based on distance from your palace or FP.

Go commy if your cities are separated by distance. Commy decides corruption by number of cities and not distance.

Ok, that said, if you can expand rapidly, commy might be better since your corruption will be low in newly conqured cities and you can set up a temple to start producing culature faster.

Republic scares me if you intend to start the fight but short brutal wars in Republic can be done, you just dont want to raze.

I would almost personally never use communism. All of you main cities will get very corrupt and your science will go way down. I suggest staying in republic if the war won't be that long or go to Monarchy. The corruption won't destroy your core cities and you can research in decent time still.

communism is fine, you just need to know how it works. You don't have any huge production cities, just lots more good production cities. It depends on how much territory you've got. just check out the civilopedia entries, they tell you the basics.

The Government you use depends on your game strategy.

I play the total war monger, normally at deity and emperor level.

If you do go this route, I recommend you stay under depostism as long as your budget can support your units.

Switching to monarchy sound good, but you must have aquaducts to get the benefits of size 7 cities. Size 6 and less have better unit support for despotism.

I only switch to monarchy if I have limited resources, otherwise I switch to republic. Once I do switch, I tend to go for quick wars to limit the war weariness effect. I also try to get courthouse and marketplaces before this switch.

The strange thing about monarch, is that it is best suited for the modern age. Only then do you get that metro unit support.

I stay in republic until the modern age before switching to democracy. The reasoning behind this is that playing deity, I'm constantly at war. Once I do reach the modern age, I go straight for Modern Armour and that tends to cut wars very short.

For lower levels I often don't play till modern age so I stay under republic.

If you do have luxuries, go for republic!

I have used communism only once! Though it might seem advantageous, it really isn't. Once you go for it, you will fall behind in the modern age. I try to fight the AI into communism, then I know it will be an easy win. They seldom come out of it!
