Guiliani decides to get off the fence...

what have roberts and alito done of significance to really make the religious right happy?

One very narrow abortion ban that does far less than anybody who hasn't read the opinion thinks it does. But the Religious Right still will cite Roberts & Alito as an example of Bush doing something for them.

well the RR must be easily satisfied if thats the case.

The "RR" isn't satisfied. No one is under any delusions that the fight has been won. This won't be over in a day. Nibbling away, a little here, and little there, until the so-called "right" to an abortion is gone. That's the plan, and it finally seems to be coming together, actually.

so after that, what happens? does the RR disband? will the RR ever go away even if we give in to their demands?

Did you even read the Supreme Court ruling? The majority opinion ruled that you couldn't perform a very narrow procedure. They still allowed killing the fetus via drugs before performing the late term procedure in question or extracting the fetus from the womb one piece at a time. It is very far from coming together. Roberts and Alito didn't even sign on to Scalia and Thomas' concurrence stating that Roe should be overturned. Thomas even wrote an concurrence stating that he would have ruled the other way if the challengers to the ban would have cited commerce clause concerns.

Actually, I did read the ruling. I guess it says something about me, and my social life that I was there on a Friday night reading the text of a recent Supreme Court case. Like I said, it isn't comprehensive - but it's a start.

I guess what would happen is that there would be a sudden surge in travels to Canada... Just because it's illegal doesn't mean people will stop doing it.

IIRC Scalia referred to abortion rights as a mansion which must be dismantled on window frame at a time.

It would be a mistake to call RG a friend to choice. I get the distinct impression that he personally doesnt care. He has a position because he must. On the other hand, its a mistake to call RG anything but a conservative. Even allowing for his positions on gun control, which he does care about, he is well right of center on issues like law enforcement, the roll of government in society, and above all, judicial interpretation. HE would nominate strict construction Judges and Justices.

That's a terrifying position for any potential President to have. Not caring? Not caring about dismantling one of the basic rights of America's Constitution? What if he were to say he didn't care about the 1st Amendment, rather than the 2nd?

america has been starting a new tradition of dismantling our basic rights, why does the right only care when it's guns involved?

were you against illegal wire tapping?

were you against the suspension of habeus corpus?

He'd probably get my vote.

I don't care what you believe about any candidate, I want a lie dectector test for all of them before getting into office. Promisary notes saying they'll resign without pay or pension if they turn out to be a bad leader who isn't true to their own ideals and laws. Kenneth star was a 'special prosecutor'.

Honestly, the U.S. Supreme Court can be dissolved as far as anyone's concerned.
