I popped a GE right after teking to Theology and now I have my choice of Hagia Sophia or the Great Mosque of Djenne.

Which is better? Why?

It depends.

HS would give you a free Great Phophet but would increase the price to the next one. So if you haven't founded a religion at all yet but are close to 200 (or worse yet over it), don't use it for HS now.
Best timing for HS in my book would be if you have indeed already founded a religion so you use it to enhance; faith points that would have gone towards that instead go to a either faith buildings if you've chosen them or else Missionaries.

I'd also be rather tempted to take a 3rd option (some other world wonder you haven't mentioned).
Also, if you happened to be playing the Mayans and just had your first free great person; I'd have directly chosen the Great Phophet instead of HS and saved the GE choice for later. The free great people from Maya also drive up cost of the next natural great person.

Neither is worth a GE imho.

Things to note: The free GPr will raise the amount of Faith needed for your next GPr, so it is best completed just after you got a natural GPr and as your "last one". Also make sure to seel your Temple (if you already have one) before you finish it. Great Mosque is imho the better wonder as the mosque gives 1 happiness, and hard to come by culture (+2) The better Missionaries are always nice too.

Build the Great Mosque of Djenne then Borobudur, using your GE to rush what you fancy. If you get both then you'll get 3 missionaries that have 3 uses each. Early on in the game when a city has no religious pressure other than your own it'll convert easily. Open borders are either 50 gold, or 2-3gpt(not hostile) if you want to convert another civ.

Great Mosque of Djenne >> Hagia Sophia.

Why?

If you're playing a religious game (which I recommend every time, the bonuses religion gives can make or break a game), you'll want to spread it as far as you can. This means investment in missionaries, and the GMoD essential increases your missionaries worth by 50%.

Also, GMoD gives more faith than HS due to the fact you get a free Mosque. Since BNW, the AI have prioritised taking faith buildings in their religions, hence getting more than one faith building in your religion needs a damn load of luck. The fact you are not likely to be getting Mosques, getting the bonuses of a Mosque at that stage of the game is pretty powerful, particularly in faith generation.

If you were to take the +2 tourism per religious building reformation belief, you could potentially have three types of religious building in one city (+6 tourism), which is a great head start vs AI.

I usualy would prefer Hag.Sop. it depends on whats left for religions. if it makes the difference in getting the beliefs you want, then its better. I don't usually worry about the extra GP costs, because I only ever want a few prophets anyway (usually just to enhance). After that, it all about saving faith for other people (more GE's or GS's or even artists).

on the other hand, sometimes what you want is more missionaries. I personally don't use missionaries much, although if your getting beakers from missionary spread, that extra spread could add up to an extra free tech after a while.

Anyone got the mathematics on that one?

I would only use the GE to rush Hag.Sop if I was desperate for a specific belief and thought I would miss it otherwise. I would not use a GE for the great mosque, I would save the GE for something more crucial depending on what my objective was.

Thanks for the advice! I went HS since I had just founded. Got a good enhancer. I agree that mosque >> temple but that was not the deciding factor.

dont think i ever built dejene.

If u play low difficulty u dont need it, your religion will dominate easy anyway if u r kinda smart.
If u play high difficulties and you havent spread religion at the point it becomes available its a lost cause anyway
