Hammers called sheilds- why?

it would have been simple to do a 5 shield icon. regular shield could have been round shields like the swordsmen have and 5 shields would have been like the roman rectangular shield. Easy enough.

I think they changed it because it never made any sense to have them be shields, and obviously the resolution constraint is no longer an issue.

In Civ II, at least, units would cost you sheilds per turn - depending on your government type more than one at times. The little shield icons on your units in enemy lands were a nice reminder of the cost of waging a war...

Shileds is very cool and nostalgic. Never under estimate the power of nostalgia.

Call me crazy, but I never get nostalgic for things that didn't make sense. I like hammers. The gold coins don't bother me, but it probably would make more sense if they went back to those little arrows to signify "trade", since most of one's trade doesn't go to gold anyway, usually. Then again, I'm having a hard time imagining arrows being as clearly readable as the gold coins are.

dudes, isn't it obvious? its because shields are made with hammers. j/k lol

the pc game civilization is loosely based on the table top civilization. and in the table top version the only thing you can produce are units (you can convert them to cities though). maybe that's why it has been shields in civ1.
