yet again i have a problem and the problem is this:

Im playing as the germans. Its 280 ad. I have the hanging gardens and 3 luxuries. There are 4 happy people in each of my cities. Then i destroy the english and there are only 3 happy people in each city. Whats going on?

Im playing version 1.21f on regent difficulty and i started the war.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I thought the Hanging Gardens affected the number of content people, not (directly) the number of happy?

If you click on unhappy people in each city, what does it tell you - you should get a popup which (sort-of) explains why they are unhappy, that might give you a clue what changed.

Could be that your people were happy with the war. Now that it's over, that reason for happiness is gone.
Or perhaps you just discovered Steam Power?

My government is despotism, my people are unhappy about overcrowding, i'm currently fighting three other wars and no one has discovered steam power yet. Cad e an sceal? (whats the story)

Could it be that they are unhappy because we are a despotism and every one else is either a monarchy or a republic?:rocket:

It's probably what Ribannah mentioned. They were happy about the war with the English (some circumstances could have caused this), and when you destroyed them, the happiness went away. The war with others might/might not be causing happiness as well. I doubt it has anything to do with you still being a despotism.

I tested your theory and it seems they were happy with the war. I made peace with the english and some people stopped being happy. Then i redeclared war and they were happy again. I did the same with the other people i was at war with and got no reaction. What sort of circumstances could have made my people happy with the war? Any ideas?

Is it possible that Firaxis could have included some sort of racial discrimination in the game?

Seems unlikely. Any help would be great.

Yep, if the war is going well, but also if they start to become a civ your people hate. If you've been at war with them previously, if they'd betrayed you, or have just generally been neighbors, etc, your people will start to hate them. When you were at war, and winning, your people are happy that you are finally getting "revenge," or something of that sort.

your people are happy when someone else declares war on you or you go to war with a "traditional enemy" (once mentioned by a firaxian).

I think it is simply his cities have grown in size and now there is one less happy person who has moved to content. I have never heard of war or any of the crap you all are talking about effecting happiness in despotism. The only effects on happiness in despotism are pop-rushing, size and owning an enemy city. Those are all that I can think of in despotism.

Well the war is going well alright. Although i've never been at war with them previously, and they didnt betray me, i betrayed them, (killed a settler, heh heh) at the beginning of the game.
They are my neighbours, and none of my cities have grown in size. Strangely the war with the indians (who betrayed me and are also down to the last city ) causes no unhappiness when ended. The indians are my closest neighbours, then the english.

Thanks for all the help everyone.
