Anyone else find them more useful than rushing GL? I used to always do the GL HS PT ND rush, however I find that by getting HG in my capital, I'm guaranteed a powerhouse production city very fast as well as the science that comes with pop. It also allows me some versatility in terms of building a few archers early to nullify and warlike civs plans.

Also the GL chain wonder rush seems to be very boring at emperor and above. I tried it for a couple games and each one failed, it'd either be built by someone else, get invaded, or my teching would be off, preventing me from bulbing something useful with GL.

My experience is that the Hanging Gardens are rarely prioritised by the AI, so there's not a lot of need to rush them. But yes, definitely worth getting for long-term advantage. The trouble with the GL is that its desirability to the AI forces you to get it earlier than you might otherwise want, so you're only getting a tech boost on a tech it's fairly quick to research to begin with. I don't focus on trick strategies and although I got the GL in my current Emperor game, I haven't managed to get either HS or ND (Tower hasn't been built yet). I am in any case going for domination, so I'll just capture them off someone else (although so far the only Wonder I've captured is Chichen Itza) - only the GL and PT have bonuses that don't transfer to you when you capture a wonder.

I like hanging gardens a lot. I think with a good production start it is viable to go for it. You can get it more quickly and afterwards work those mines without sacrificing growth. I just tried it in my large map immortal game and got it on turn 67 I think. Problem of course is that you have to prioritize it and sometimes an AI will build it before you do no matter what and then you are really behind.

Pros:
- Great growth and production boost which will allow you to get other wonders more easily

Cons:
- Great artist point will probably generate a not-so-desirable great artist later in the game
- Mathematics is somewhat off the usual tech paths
- It is a wonder and getting too used to it will lose you some games where you don't get it

I really never prioritize it but in my last game I played on King as Monty because I felt synergy between Tradition Tree and the Floating Gardens from the Aztecs.
However, my tech path was pottery, writing, researched mathematics meanwhile (which I was lucky because I needed animal husbandry for cows in my city and the wheel which gave me the floating gardens) and I think I had time to research mining or calendar, I bulbed philosophy and build HG while I researched Theology, then civil service and GS bulbed Education.
I think that was a great start, recommend it ;)

EDIT: I played OCC....

The Hanging gardens, when built in a capital city with a long river and lots of good food and production tiles and maybe even a jungle tile or 2, is the most powerful wonder in the game. What other wonder allows you to produce at full capity and continue to grow from basically the start of the game? Its well worth your while to prioritise this wonder in any game. Its also worthwhile, to do restarts until you get the right type of capital setting. I played Egypt quite a bit, and expermented with all the early game wonder combinations. The hanging gardens is by far the most powerful. Even in culture games, I would build this instead of the Oracle. The AIs do prioritise this wonder to a degree, it will always get built fairly soon in games with 8+ AIs. If you play Egypt or you have marble in your capital, you should be able to build GL, while you research math, then build HG at least at Emperor level. You will lose Oracle, but I think, and others have concurred that HG is more critical in a cultural game than Oracle (I know this is blasphlemy, but I tested it several times, and that's the way it plays out). Without Egypt or marble, just go straight for HG. Then you will able to build HS-PT quickly. If you only build 3 early game wonders, these are the 3 you want in any type of game.

I haven't played above Emperor, as I'm fairly new to the game, but I've never missed on HG, even without Egypt/marble, when I prioritise it, i.e. don't even try for GL.

Very Good Wonder. Pretty much impossible to get on higher levels unless you rush build it. But then your losing o much science its not worth it.

On OCC and tall empires your prioriety is GP, so HS plus 25% GP points and free GP becomes way more useful then the plus 10 food from hanging gardens.

So overall its a very good wonder, but not as good as 1)HS, 2) NC which are on a completely different tech path.

@ civplay I agree, HS is right up there with hanging gardens as the best wonders. By NC, I assume you mean national college, which isn't a world wonder. The beauty of HG is that once you build it, you should be able to rush build HS-PT, assuming you can reseasrch Philo and Theo, while HG is building, and get a GS to get Education. Getting these 3 wonders and making the best use of them gives you a great chance to compete at Emperor. As for the higher levels, I have no idea.

I generally find it impractical on immortal, mostly because of it's place in the tech tree. It's too bad really, it's a great wonder. I think King/Emperor is probably a good level to build it.

Its easy to get any wonder and then some built up to emperor, but it seems to be much more luck based on the top two diffs.

On Emperor difficulty which wonders you take isn't really much debate. To achieve the built every wonder in the game acheivement I played as egypt kept re-rolling until I had marble went tradition route for added wonder production.

Built GL, NC, then HS. Settled the GE. Then with the added science and production proceded to literally build every wonder in the game except some of the DLC wonders which I built in my previous game anyways.

On immortal and diety you pretty much have to decide to either go HG or HS and its not even close to which wonder I would take. In literally every situation possible HS is better.

The build all Wonders achievement isn't build them all in one game, it's just build all the wonders across all games.

Stonehedge-GL-Pyra-HG-Oracle-HS-ND-PT-CI-TJ-Himeji-GW
can someone explain these acronyms? For you it will be 3 minutes writing, for me tens of minutes of searching ;) I supspect GW not being the Great Wall ;) ?

GL - great library
HG - Hanging Gardens
HS - Hagia Sophia
ND - Notre Dame
PT - Porcelain Tower
CI - Chitchen Itza
TJ - ?? Taj Mahal?
GW - Great Wall I think?

It's not a serious strategy on high levels to build all of those though.

Dw realized that. Did you read the last part of the comment where I said I didnt build a few early wonders that I already built in a previous game. But you know what that should be an achievement. Its completely do able
