Hail everyone! I have Civ3 Vanilla. My newbie question of the day is:
How do you keep your citizens happy? I have a new town, with no luxuries. It grew to 4 citizens and 1 was already unhappy (says 100% is way too crowded). This was the capital with a Palace, my first and only town as I am experimenting with my Workers and land improvements (not actually playing a game to victory). I improved the squares where the citizens are (roads, mines). The civilization is Persian (don't think that matters).

Is 4 citizens the maximum I can have? I thought it was 6.

4 citizens are born content on chieftain, 3 on warlord, 2 on regent and monarch, 1 above that. There are several ways to keep your citizens happy: luxuries, military police (for despotism, monarchy, and communism), luxury slider, specialists (entertainers will create a happy face, while other specialists will only remove an unhappy citizen), improvements (e.g. temples), and wonders (e.g. Bach's Cathedral), in a rough hierarchy of preference. War happiness when someone declares war on you also helps, although you generally can't specifically get this.

In your specific circumstance, you'll definitely want to increase the luxury slider. You probably want to build a settler soon too (unless you're choosing not to since you're not playing normally apparently; in this case building another worker may be wise).

In each level, a certain number of citizens are born content. In Cheiftan and Warlord, you get 3 content citizens before the first unhappy is born. In higher levels, they get less and less.

Without a luxury or some other happiness indusing thing, the city will begin to riot if it gets to size 4. Fix this by going to your Domestic advisor (F1) and move the luxury slider up to 10 or 20 percent- or enough to make the happy citizens equal or greater to the sad ones.

Seems like I read in another thread that you are playing on Chieftain level. If someone told you you could have 6 (in Ancient Age Despotism), I'll bet they meant the 4 born content PLUS 2 warriors for MP duty. That would make 6.

the easy way out is to put just 10% of your money to entertainment. sometimes you will also have to build a temple. The HAnging gardens is a nice wonder to build for happiness
