My hard drive developed a bad sector. I know this is no big deal cus the scandisk can label it bad and ignore it, but when it gets there it stops scanning and locks up. What can I do to rectify this? I am not getting rid of this drive because it's just a bad sector. Every time my computer boots it wants to scan but other than that, it works fine.

where are you running scandisk?
in windows or in the dos blue screen scandisk thingy

I run it in windows, but when the computer boots it rns it in dos blue thingy.

Modern drives usually have "spare" sectors they can use to re-map any bad areas to. If you've run out of these then maybe the drive is more damaged than you think October. (I won't be dogmatic about this: I don't know how the re-mapping works.) I used to have a Connor HD that started with only a few failures but just got worse and worse. I eventually gave in and bought a new drive.

Well I downloaded WD's diagnostic program. It told me that the drive is wasted. It has between 2 and 9 "unrepairable" errors on it. I will be getting a free replacement in the mail from WD.

Then I have to start over, again, with all my CD's reinstalling windows and software. It's getting old.

I bought a 30gig in July. They copied my stuff on it. In September it failed and I got a new one for free. Had to start over though. Now that one went bad. I won't tolerate this much longer.

Let us hope this one works for a long time, like HD's are supposed to. It takes forever to reinstall everything and get it all configured the way I had it.

The good thing is this time since my computer still boots, I can back up some of my data before clearing it. I can save my address book and bookmarks and digital pictures.
