He has reason to be terrified. He must have have heard of the Chinese tern "Hong Men Yan" - loosely translated as "Red Door Banquet". An ancient Chinese emperor or warlord would invite all his critics or opponents to a banquet, and then trap them and slay them all.

Of course, it doesn't work every time. Some of the potential victims would be smart enough to bring along aides who are in reality bodyguards.
