HD space goes way down when running a big prog but goes back up when prog closes?

Every time I run a prog that require huge amount of CPU work my HD space of the primary HD goes to 0, and as soon as the prog is closed HD space goes back up again. Is there a way to prevent this from happening w/o buying ram or a new CPU or not open those kind of progs?

What kind of program is it? it could be storing loads of data in the temporary folders, and removing it once its closed, thus sucking up your HD space. Its possible its using your HD space as a swap when it runs out of memory too.
