howdy y'all,

i just recently switched from civ3 vanilla to civ3 complete and am playing c3c. so i'm learning all kinds of differences ... [*grin*] that said, i tried to use a copter to drop some marines behind enemy lines - makes a nifty distraction.

however, i could not move the copter to the desired front-line city! i thot at 1st that it needed an airport - a nasty thing if true, but that wasn't it. i finally found that there seems to be a range limit. bombers can make the jump between any two cities [at least between any two i have right now] with no problem. however, the same city-to-city jump cannot be made with a copter.

why? ... and is that really what i am seeing?

btw, the cities are at the following grid points ...

- works
start = 57,133
end = 21,91

- fails
start = 57,133
end = 18,72

the two destination cities do NOT have airports, the start city does. i don't think that makes any diff, tho. plus, as i implied earlier, the same two cities work FINE when i re-base either fighters or bombers.

this did NOT happen in civ3 vanilla.

help, please?

take care,
lee

In VC3/PTW, you had unlimited rebase range. This was for any flying unit that had the rebase option open to them. In C3C, it's been limited to 3x the operational range. Might be 4x, but i'm pretty sure it's 3x.

howdy Turner,

thanks for the info, it's much appreciated. is the change mentioned in the game docs anywhere? i thot i looked thru things pretty carefully and found nothing. [*sigh ...*] i guess when the docs fail to index outposts or rally points, it's too much to expect that change to get in ... [*grin*]

thanks again for the quick, informative response!

take care,
lee

I'm not sure where it's documented. IIRC, it was something I had to dig for to find. I seem to remember being surprised at that as well.

Didn't we used to have a thread that listed the version changes? I'll look.

Edit: So far I haven't found it. I remember having "version shock" when I switched to conquests. I was sure I had an AI civ on the ropes because all they could throw at me were longbows and spears, right? Then 20 or 30 guerillas popped out and I wasn't so sure anymore. A lot of people forget that swordsmen never upgraded to anything in vanilla, now they go all the way up to the modern age. Taking away all their resources isn't enough to cripple them by itself anymore.

It also needs to be pointed out that that thread is stickied at the top of this forum. :p

I see that now. I guess the search function isn't worth .. .. .. .. ..

howdy Civinator,

kool! as you found, that article has the info ...
"
Re-base: This mission moves the selected air unit from its current base to a new city, aircraft carrier, or airfield (in Vanilla and Play the World, they have an unlimited rebase range - in Conquests, it is 3 times their operating range).
"

thanks folks! it's much appreciated.

take care,
lee
