Here is the strategy I have done to subdue a nation of equal power or greater. First load up all units that the Helicopter can hold and rebase it as close to your city that is near an enemy city. When the Helicopter is there, order the helicpter to airdrop near the enemy city (I strongly suggest the use of Fighters to recon the area before droping). When you succed on capturing the city, Rebase the Helicopter to the newly aquired city and unload all of your units (Except one or two units with high defense values) in the Helicopter and start over with another enemy city.

I use a similar non-aggresive strategy. I use it when you build new cities on another continent later in the game. This acts as an aiport, allowing you to send in workers, settlers, troops, etc.

I need to try your "city-hopping strategy".

Nice tactic!

I do it w/ airports, though.

I have been thinking about using an airbourne assault to experiment with attacking the mainland of America from an island stronghold that I intend to secure shortly. I have never used a helicopter in battle, and paratroopers only for fun. I love seeing their animation :)

I have checked the range of paratroopers and I was amazed with them. I will be using them for sure to drop key areas of America while sending the armour in via a couple transports. Now having never been in a situation where a helicopter would be handy. I think I have only built 1 in my entire Civ playing days.. however right now the Russian industry is building its first helicopter. In the next couple of years it will be tested in helping clean up the French.

My question, I now use Mechanized Infantry instead of Infantry.. Can the MI be put in a Helicopter and flown into battle? If not do I use Marines? Guerillas?

um, a helicopter can only hold 1 unit?

With the use of an editor, I can make the Helicopter unit carry more than 1 unit :).

No, Mechanized Infantry cannot be loaded into helicopters without editing the game. I usually use marines in helicopters because of their superior attack (for a foot unit).

My guess is that Firaxis wanted to make it realistic. You don't see Bradleys unloaded from Hueys.

I mostly use helicopters to transport infantry to
newly captured, or build, cities on far continents.
For this reason never upgrade all infantry to MI.
After ruching baracks in these cities upgrade.

bradley's no, they wiegh 25 tonnes, but Strykers are only 16, small enough to be grabbed by a chinook or c-130 herc (but you can fit 4 into a c-5), in fact that's half the logic behind the stryker, deployability, mobility (it's not tracked like the bradley, quicker on roads, a little slower off). The other half of the logic is that the stryker doesn't fill any spesific roll, it's just the body, it can be equipped to fill almost any other roll. they have everything from logistics and command and controle to APC, fire support and anti tank variants...
which says two things to me, first is that the game goes to 2050 but the tech only goes to 5 years ago (except for that whole going to mars bit, it says alpha centurai but it's mars.). Second is that if they were trying to be realistic they'd have kept the SMAC unit design thing...
