@ mods: I didn't see an introduction thread here.. hence just popped in.
sorry. please move if in appropriate.

hey people, i am new here.
Name - Samuel
Age- 18 almost (in another 2 yr 3 months :()
Favorite drink - Pepsi
Favorite food - anything, trying to stay away from greens. you see, our parents are beyond logic: I eat animals that eats the greens.. so I am eating greens right .. they don't understand.. i get a smack on the back of my head or just told to shut up !

Well, this might be a bit weird to some people, but i have just got hold of my first game of Civ 3. Actually i am more into his CoD/ CS/ warcraft multi - player adrenaline junkie.

Well, i wish to let you guys know how this mishap happened.
my elder bro was moving out to another city for a job and I pitched in to pack up his stuff more extra cash ... ;)

Inside one of his big fat books of some "variance", 2 cd's propped out...
i was like

I asked him "what are these? why have you kept them here ? " with the knowing grin what we hide ....
"Must be vintage p**n" i was thinking to myself.. :satan:
come on this guy is just runnin on hormones at this age.. that is almost what i think of while not doing other stuffs.

it turned out to be this game, civ 3, which was his favorite time pass while he was a student.
i checked the other one, it was a safe copy of the same thing, in case one of them stopped working. oh gawd ! crazy people !!

So i installed this, i was astounded that games were in Cd's. these days, even 2 dvd's are not good enough..

I have just started playing the game is the hardest mode, and trying to go through some of the stuff here. I have a challenge with my older friend, my bro, i need to master this game, and play a full game, without cheating and he would get me the new civ 5 game. I want that over Christmas this year,

I wish to get to that level asap.
Since the general snigger to strat games, as they being way too easy, I tried straight in Deity level, i was b**ch slapped by the Russians with arrows and swords in 30 mins or so... :spank:
my bro called back to rub salt on it..

Hence I am back starting off in the easiest Chieftain mode
I have been going through some of the articles and this huge !!! so many stuffs to consider..

** also, i downloaded the hotkeys pdf file, "j" move stack doesn't work :(

regards
Bonefang

Welcome to CFC, bonefang! It sounds like you had quite the awakening on your first run at C3C. If you want that game by Xmas, you'll need to learn, and learn fast. Head off to the Civ 3 War Academy (top of the page, under Civ III), then down into "Succession Games." There's a Training Day Game going on right now that might prove enlightening.

thanks aabraxan ..
i have read couple of the Sg's. They are very interesting.. i am gonna try that out as i reach home .. :D

just going through TuPac's game.. its nice .. plus the story is very fascinating..

Are you playing vanilla, PTW, or Conquests? (I'm guessing not conquests since you wrote that the highest level was deity.) Pay attention to which game is used in the postings you read, as the three versions are significantly different. Also, make sure your game is fully patched or you will run into difficulties, as gameplay changed significantly with some patches.

Wish I had something to bet. What does "play a full game" mean? I would bet you couldn't acheive any victory condition at Monarch or above before xmas.

It's never too late to discover Civ3 :D
I suggest you to leave aside Chieftain, it's way too easy and you won't learn much with it. Try Warlord or even Regent, where you are at the same level as the AS.

Welcome to CFC!:band: It's a great game and you will enjoy it. This is the best place to learn more about the game.

Welome to the forum, bonefang!

 :woohoo: :bounce:

I like someone who dreams big. And to go from knowing nothing to winning at Diety in one fell swoop certainly qualifies for that!

There is a lot to be learned and understood. Don't let that stop you. Take one thing at a time and build on it.

One way to help you win at Diety by Christmas is to define how you plan to win at Diety and what map settings you need and which civ to play. I'm thinking of a Conquest win with Iroquois on a Tiny Map with a pangea landmass, but that is just a starting point for discussion. Tiny map = faster game since fewer AIs.

And just to make sure you game is legit, why not submit it to the Hall of Fame? That would be a way to validate your win with an objective 3rd party.

Welcome to Civfanatics and Civ3! :D What an interesting way to stumble upon a classic, great game. It's ten years old by this point, but as you can see there are still a fair few of us still playing it, despite the release of sequels -- Civ4, Civ4 Colonization, Civ5, and so on.

If you are interested in improving your schools, there are a host of useful articles in the War Academy and on the strategy forums. Reading through succession game logs is also a good idea, and don't hesitate to ask questions or even share your game for others to play and offer advice on. :)

tR1cKy suggested an immediate move to Warlord or Regent. I say play a game on a Tiny map as Chieftain, you should be able to win no problem. Then maybe 1, possibly 2 games at Warlord, first one a Small map, then a Standard map. Then try Regent. If that is too tough, back to Warlord till you can beat that consistently. Then back to Regent, If you can beat it now, good. Rinse and repeat till Deity. This is the strategy that I'm following, at least, and it's working for me.

Hello new person. I agree, civ is one heck of an addictive game!

Here's a great way to advance through the hardness levels really quick:

Start a tiny map on Cheiftan level. Use the Americans as they build roads really quick, have an explorer to start with (to go find free techs with) and are often located near luxuries (every time I've played them).

When you've defeated that level go back to the main menu and click 'play last world' and then don't change any options except the hardness level. You will be presented with exactly the same game only on a harder level.

The main benefit of this is you will know in advance where all the resources are and what all the terrain is like and where all the barbarian huts are.

As you work through the levels you will get an excellent idea of how the change in levels effects the game and where your limitations are. Last time I tried this I got to Monarch level and won with so much ease it felt like cheiftan.

By following this method you should be able to win at least an Emperor or Diety far quicker than you thought possible!

well i am overwhelmed by the posts.
thanks guys.

> i am playing normal civ 3. no patches, no expansions. I tried to download PTW and Conquest, the files are in a format that i do not know. Hence i am stuck with Civ 3.

> I started to play a medium map yesterday evening, still unfinished :(
2 nations left. I was Jap, the samurai's are nice !! just started to upgrade them. The culture flip in my cities is irritating.
though a lot of english cities joined my side, that was nice..
^^ the Hypocrite speaks.

yes chieftain is stupid, the AI doesn't fight back.. i am doing the 2nd stage difficulty now.

Do patch your game. There is a link on the main page (Downloads) that will get you go the patch.

PTW and Conquests are expansions, for which you have to pay.

I'd recommend getting Complete. It's very cheap because the game is so old. Check out Amazon - I think it's under $10. The scenarios themselves are worth it.

I'm not sure where you are located, but if you have a used video game store like a Gamestop or something, they often have a used PC game rack. I've had luck there from time to time. That, of course, was after I ordered mine on ebay from England. All told it was still only $15.00.

I got mine at Best Buy for $10 (on sale) a couple years back. I think that if you really want to get Civ3 Complete fast, you should go to a store and get it ($15-20). If you don't mind waiting, grab it online. There are some really cheap copies out there.

whos this cracker guy ? i absolutely adore this fellow ...

just been through his article on "Opening Play sites", realized i didn't know . the best thing was i didn't know the production could be optimized by clicking on various sites...
