Hello all, I recently stumbled across a copy of this; I installed it and, needless to say, have become pretty addicted to it (for the few days I've been messing around). I play on Chieftan (never played a Civ game before) so I can acclimate to the style of play in the series.

I can build a strong, successful, and technologically-advanced civilization without much problem (I'm not bragging; I know it's on Chieftan), but I have a problem with the military aspect. See, I'm used to RTS games such as Rise of Nations, Starcraft, etc., so moving armies in this game seems a little clumsy for me. Mix in the factor that I'm usually a defensive player in RTS games, and it's clear that I have no idea which strategies to pursue for world domination. My units are all top of the line, I just dont know how to use them efficiently.

Anyway, without further ado, here is my game. I am playing as the Carthaginians on the World map (non-random resources, random starting positions), and I started in Australia. Good for me, eh?

Up until the current time (1855 A.D.), I have had minimal military contact (sure, war had been declared more than a handful of times, but very few actual conflicts) with the rest of the world. Early on, I allied with the Americans, who occupied Eastern Asia. I would soon find that they were the weakest civilization on the planet, and my refusal to go to war for them caused a break in the worthless alliance. Meanwhile, I had cast an alliance with Catherine the Great and the Russians, who occupied the continent of South America. Although this alliance still stands, very little use is made of it.

I expanded quick and early. I made seafaring a priority and easily occupied the islands surrounding Australia. I irrigated the perimeter and have started to build roads (and soon, railroads) through the interior.

Here is my current colonization of the islands surround Australia, as well as my Southern Asia colony:

Another added bonus of the early Navigation advantage was the availability of island colonies on other continents. I snagged Madagascar and Great Britain this way, both of which are near other civ's continents.:

One bonus though...I went to go colonize Japan (right next to a couple of American cities), but there didnt seem to be any good settling sites; so I set sail for the portion of land above Japan. I colonized that with 3 quick cities and started upgrading. Now, I have a prime conquest opportunity here. The first city I founded there, Oea, has become my most prolific city:

The best part about this is its proximity to American cities. It can easily pump out a few military units and easily sustain them.

So I guess this is where I ask....what should I do here? The Americans are fairly weak, and should be easy to conquer, but I have no clue as to what my strategic moves should be.

Could anybody help me out here? Or tell me how I'm doing in terms of expansion, infrastructure, and whatnot? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Nice screenshots. What I have to do when I want to make Civ II screenshots?

You have a great corruption rate do you? :)

Welcome to Civ Fanatics, lakerspsg4.

You seem to have expanded nicely already. As for your strategy, you have to keep in mind that one of the great and rare features of Civ series is that they are not just another war game. While you can win by conquest, you can also win by being the first to achieve space colonization. Given how you have played the game thus far, a space race win is not just possible but most likely your better option. I would switch to democracy right away, stay defensive, concentrate on offshore trade (both domestic and international), build non military wonders, and stockpile caravans.

Hit the print screen (PrtSc) button to take a screenshot. Open up Paint and paste (control+v). Crop it however you'd like, then save it. Then go to imageshack.us and you cna host it for free.

The corruption rate in that city (Oea) is bad because it's on another continent altogether...the American civilization's borders come between it and my capital city. Other than that, I've been doing pretty well corruption-wise.

Thank you.

I would go for spaceship when I am further down the line (difficulty-wise)...right now, I'd like to have fun and try to conquer the world while it's still so easy.

In another game, I had some success with a force of dragoons that alternately healed completely when I captured cities. This let me rampage through the Sioux's territory. This was 600 years earlier than the game that I showed here though.

60 years later, and now apparently I'm the 5th Most Powerful Civ? Doesn't make sense; I had been taking American cities. I did break a few peace treaties, so would that have counted against me? Anyway, I'm off to try and conquer the rest of Eastern Asia. I might have waited a tad too long to try for conquest; there's no way I'll be able to take over all of these civs by 2020. However, I can concentrate my Asian colonies on my battles in Asia, and the rest of my colonies will push for space.

Next game, I shall try for some early conquest to double my empire.

Indeed the longer you wait, the harder it is to conquer the world. One thing you ought to try is to capture a civ's capital and then try to bribe their remaining cities. This method is both quicker and cheaper than an outright conquest of one city after another.

The best advice we can give you is to just keep playing the game and eventually you'll get good at it. If you wanted to, though, you could read through some of the tutorials written on the game, namely some of the stuff written here. Good luck
