Hey i just got this game and am new to the Civ series and was wondering if you guys could help me out with a few questions.

1. I've been reading on the forums a bit and have seen that lenght of some games go on for like 10 or 20 hours. How do games last this long?

2. I tried the normal and epic speeds and could not tell the difference between them because it seemed like taht each turn still took up 40 years. So what is the difference between quick normal epic and marathon?

3. When you improve tiles by building a farm, cottage, or mine on it, do you have to build a road from the tile back to the city inorder for it to improve your economy?

4. Finally, I was curious about ending the game. I have gotten to the sixteenth century and have not gotten anywhere near the modern age (if that is the last one). So can you play beyond 2050, because I read that is when the game is supposed to end, and if you can, how much longer?

1. Generally they play 2hrs-10 in single player and a lot longer in mutliplayer.
2. Yes, they all transition 40 years a turn in the beginning but the normal and epic games have more turns and take longer to play (marathon being the new longest and then epic as second longest then normal then quick).
3. No, but it is good to build roads to wherever you improve so you can get there quickly in case barbs are pillaging or you are at war.
4. Yes, you can but it does not affect your score at all.

1-A Standard length game is 450ish turns. At just 2 minutes per turn, that's 15 hours of gameplay. Longer turns and slower game speeds obviously slow this down even more.

2-The game speeds have different numbers of turns for a full game, and the passage of years and costs of buildings, units, and techs is changed accordingly. Basically, what year it is isn't the greatest indication of exactly how many turns have passed ;)

3-In general, no. A farm is a farm is a farm, regardless of whether or not it has a road on it. If, however, the tile in question has a specific resource on it, you must have a road on that tile (and roads connecting that tile to your "trade network") to get access to that resource. For example, a Mine on Iron will still give you hammers, but you cannot build Swordsmen until you have built a road from that mined Iron to your cities.

4-The game ends in a "Time Victory" at 2050, where whoever has the highest score is granted the win. The game can end before that point if somebody wins another type of victory: Cultural, Diplomatic, Space Race, Domination, or Conquest. Once the game is won, you can keep playing for as long as you like, though there is seldom much point in doing so since the game is already over.

1. I'm on a Marathon game on a Huge that has lasted 31hours at the moment it's 1085 Game time.
2. The main difference between the different settings is how fast you research Techs and build items.
3. No but roads can be very useful.
4. The modern age is the last one, and you can play a single game until you want to finish (you can continue to plat after you win).

So if each game lasts 450 turns(average), what would be the year at the
450'th turn?

If it lasts 450 turns, then the 450th would be 2050

For the record, I'm not sure exactly how many turns a Standard game lasts, but it's about 450 :crazyeye:
