Help: Being attacked by large army, very few defenses

Basically, I've been attacked by a massive Civ (Rome) and I have a defense force of about one unit per city. While I am technologically superior, my current defense force is from ancient Era. I have around 600 gold (30 per turn) and am going to have gunpowder in four turns. No one seems to want to join me and fight him off and he will talk to me, but won't negotiate peace.

Can anyone help?

Don't tell me what I've done wrong (Because that's fairly obvious) and don't tell me any cheats or glitches I can use, but tell me how I can get out of it without taking too much damage.

Strategic defense, fortify on forested hills between your civ and Enemy and wait for him to come to you so you can make use of the def bonus .

I'm not sure how we're supposed to help you without seeing screenshots of your situation.

The computer is TERRIBLE at combat. If you've got a few technologically superior units, you can easily defend yourself. I played a game yesterday where I had 4 cavalry, 3 destroyers and a fighter kill about 10 artillery and 20 riflemen.

basically buy the best siege/ranged unit you can get in the city that needs it most. With whatever's left, upgrade units. As said earlier fortify next to your city on hills, but make sure every city has a garrison. If the city's gonna fall, make sure the garrison isn't in it. Try diplomatically getting lump sum golds from other civs too maybe?

Leave cities in back undefended imo, their strength should be high enough to defend themselves from the oddball attacks.
