Help! Error with saved games

Hi all, I am having an error with a lot of saved games I'm trying to open. I'm running vanilla Civ3, patched to the latest version. I get this message when loading the game:

DataIO operation System Error: UNIT

Any ideas what this could mean?

It either means its a corrupt save file, or its a PTW or C3C save, not a vanilla Civ3 one. If you post it, I can probably confirm for you.
