Help!! How do I stop production???

Everytime my cities build something a popup window comes up and forces me to build something else, this is driving my economy down the drain. I want to set some cities to not build anything, what am I missing?

Have them build wealth, (if you have that option yet), but otherwise, you can't just stop production.

Buildings are free. Build a building they can't hurt your economy. Otherwise, you need to discover currency to build wealth.

Well that's stupid as hell, why can't I stop production or put production into wealth like in CIV II & III? This is rediculous, I don't have any buildings to build, every city is full of all the buildings I can build. All I can build are units, which unit(s) don't cost any upkeep then?

Well you can always build units and then disband them (which is just like having the city build nothing)...probably make them expensive units too so that you won't have to worry about disbanding them too often.
and you could build the expensive units and disband cheaper ones that haven't gotten many experience points upgrading with production instead of gold.

after researching ceratian techs you will be granted the ability to pool your resources towards wealth/science/culture

I found a way.

Tell a city to build something, then after you leave that pop-up menu, select the city information bar so that it brings up the list of units/buildings/wonders at the bottom. Click on anything in the build queue on the far left, and it will cancel everything. I tried it and ended the turn, and it didn't force me to reselect a new unit/building to construct.

Thanks SuperBeaver, that's exactly what I was looking for. Glad someone knows what they are talking about instead of just saying "no you can't do it, you have to research something". lol The manual nor tutorial doesn't show this at all, another bad mistake by CIV IV. This is an important feature to know.

Hey, now, how do I sell BUILDINGS I've already built, so I can build them again and sell them for cash?

Ravinhood, i think you are being a little silly..

if you research currency like the other chaps said you can turn your production into Wealth.

Also I don't know why you would want to stop production anyway, I have only done it near end-game when i have built everything...

I'm running a modded game Tephra, 960 turns with 2-1/2 times research values, so there's lots of times between research discoveries for buildings that I can build or wealth increasing buildings, etc. So, I needed to be able to stop production at various intervals and not have to disband every dang unit everytime it was built.

I'm playing a long version so the ancient era has a lot more wars and more times to use those units before gunpowder and tanks take the field. It's great so far, just needed to know how to turn off production so I don't have to micromanage every city everytime it builds something.

Have been having a 4 front war with the AI players, playing on aggressive AI and monarchy difficulty. Most challenging CIV game I've ever played, brings back the good ole days memories of the CIV I AI.

If you are running a modded game, then mod it further to put Wealth on a low end tech instead of on Currency.

If I did that Zyphyr, then research times would go down and I don't want that (I don't want more money really, just wanted to be able to shut production down for a few turns and still keep my science at 60/40 (like good ole CIV III) , all I wanted was to be able to turn off production and Superbeaver knew how. It's working just like I want it to now.

I don't want a "fast teching" game, I want a long "wargame" with wars in all eras, not just musket and tanks like most civ games "rush" too all to quickly for my tastes.

That's what's great about CIV IV, with just a few changes in the speed and world size and a few other easy adjustable text files one can get the game THEY enjoy and not worry about what the other guy is playing.
