Help im an Idiot!

Ok I just started this addicting game 2 days ago and all I have is the CD. I dont know how it works and I've been going to all these sites and cant find anything that helps!
Ok when I make a mine do I need a road that leads to it? How do I mine? When someone says 1x1x what does that mean? Where should I build my cities? Shields is production right? WHats the point of irrigation and when and how should I use it? How do use caravans? What is the purpose of them?

If someone would answer these simple newbie questions I'd be eternally grateful. Thank you.

I felt like that when I first got the game too. I'll answer to your questions the best I can:

1. Just build the mine in your city radius and you can make use of the extra shield production. You don't need a road to it. (Civilization III is going to need them though)

2. To mine just put a settler on the hills you want to mine and then select mine form the orders menu or simply hit "m"

3. 1x1x is now the game is played in single player mode anyway. It means regular production and movement.

4. Buid your cities where they will have the best growth potential while taking advantage of as many special resources as possible. Balance is the key here.

5. Shields is what is used for building thing within your city.

6. Irrigation increases the ammount of food squares can produce and makes your city grow larger and faster.

7. To use caravans you need to select your trade advisor from the advisor menu and then look at what resources your city is producing by looking in the city screen. Next, choose that resource on the trade advisor menu and it will tell you what cities need that resource. Then once you build a caravan you just simply tell it what city to go to.

8. Caravans increase your trade which increases you income and makes your science rate faster.
