I'm just starting a band and I'll need a name for it. Maybe you guys can help me think of one. These are the rules:

1. It must be original.
2. It must be easy to spell right just from hearing it.
3. It mustn't be too long.
4. If you check the name on a search engine now, the name must get very few hits (at the moment).
5. It must be appropriate for the kind of music we're going to play.

What are we going to play? Well, at first we'll be playing rock and R&B in local pubs and clubs. Later on we can do our own stuff at bigger gigs.

Let loose the famous CFC creativity and let's have your band name suggestions!

Hmmm... "Los Tres Bastardos Espanol" might be a smidgeon long, even though it is one of my favourites, as it is rare that the band has only three members who are all Spanish.
I'll try and conjure up some others... "Arthur Penney", or something to that effect? :ack:

"The Broken Spheres"
"Modsognor"
"Ragnarock"
"Jarn Grieper"

Angliaction
Rythm Kings
Rythm and Thrash
ReBlues
Biff and the Anglotones
The Sensation Killers
Mark My Time
Saddest Faction

I admit I'm too lazy to try any of these in a search engine, because of the downhome groovy  feeling that The Best of Sam and Dave is giving me. "Just hold on, I'm comin'..." And only you can decide which ones I was actually serious about!

Good luck with it, though.

Err… Here are some Historical names. Some of them may have a problem with Rule II.
But I think they are very original:

Hartagga (A wild animal in Hittite)
Leipoxa (Means Great Teacher in Scythian)
Niththas (Warriors in Anglo-Saxon)
Idanthyr(Scythian King)
Nidhug (Serpent in Nordic Mythology)
Brynchós (guitar in Thracian)
Midangard (World in Anglo-Saxon)
Arkamijala (Musician in Hittite)
Camulos (War God in Gallic Celtic)

But then of course… Giant Radioactive Monkey… and The Noisy Bunch…

Cimbri

Tried the Google thing with mine....

Only one I can think of right now is

Paradise Found

Mind you, what I found on Google was resort stuff, but no bands as of yet.

Cheers!

Wow! I set this thread up an hour and a half ago, and already there are some brilliant ideas. (Some of them even fit all the rules! ;) )

What I'm going to do is this: I'll take the names and present them to the other band members later this week and see what everyone says. I won't tell you my favourites right now, but I'll let you all know after we've talked about it.

But there's plenty of time between now and then, so meanwhile, since I suspect there's plenty more ideas, please keep 'em coming. :goodjob:

Except the first I don't think the name should really follow all these rules. I mean look at the great and/or successful bands which had names that aren't following these rules...

2. It must be easy to spell right just from hearing it - Beatles
3. It mustn't be too long - Red hot chilli peppers
4. If you check the name on a search engine now, the name must get very few hits (at the moment). - Queen
5. It must be appropriate for the kind of music we're going to play. - Since when do names have anything to do with the style (except for heavy metal)?

Now that i'm done, I admit I have no idea. I also believe that the beast idea would come from you or another band memeber. You know what fits you better than anyone else.

Interesting points G-man but the rules are still useful. The point is the context.

rule 2: The world has moved on since the Beatles. There is much more competition now than then. I want people to get our name right when they search for more details of us. And they'll do that on the net, not just by word of mouth.

rule 3: Something I learnt years ago: if you have a short name then you can use big letters in the same space when you advertise! It's more eye-catching and it does make a difference.

rule 4: If Queen were emerging now, maybe they'd have a tougher time at the start making an impression. Today's music listeners are net-aware. Our name must not be lost in a sea of other things.

rule 5: Names needn't have anything to do with style. But they can do. And it's certainly easy to make an inappropriate name for a style.

By the way, if anyone sees a name that someone else has suggested here and they think it's especially good, do say so! Because whether other people like it is also important.
