You can also right click the unit in your city screen, then choose from the options presented. The best way to do a mass upgrade is in your f3 screen. Select display by units. Right-click on each unit, and you will get the same result as the city screen. As you upgrade, the next one in line moves itself into the old one's place. If it can't be upgraded at this time, move on to the next icon.

No, the best way to do a mass upgrade is to get all your units in a barracks (which most should be in one, anyway...) and then select one of them and hit Shift+U.;)

I've never tried bustedsynapses' method, but AFAIK, the F3 screen doesn't display a unit's experience level. As a general rule, you don't want to upgrade elites. That holds true for sercer88's method, too. You want to be sure that elites are not in the raxes when you hit Shift+U.

You can tell by the number of hashes on the green bar. This is only if you want to not upgrade some units, such as elites. The tricky part is to find the elites that have already made a leader.

Basically, I do them by hand, but if nothing is going on (wars), I will move the units out of the town, if I do not want them upgraded and the use the mass upgrade hotkey. Then move them back into town.
