I'm trying to install a printer/scanner/copier combination's software on my mother's PC. Halfway through, it tells me it can't find one of the needed files- namely, DATA.cab. I check the drive, and that file is there. Only, it's associated with Winrar. I uninstall winrar. Now it's associated with winzip, and I can't seem to figure out how to tell Winzip to stop associating itself with .cabs. I don't want to uninstall winzip, since I'd have to redownload it again..

Advice? I opened up the F drive in Windows Explorer, went to Tools/Options/File Types, and deleted the Winzip association with .cab...but the idiot program STILL won't read the file. I aborted installation and tried again, but...nngh.

Open up a Windows Explorer (notIE) window, and click on Tools, and Folder Options. When the window opens, open up the 'File Types' tab, and find .cab under the 'Extentions' column, and delete the entry. This will remove the .cab filetype with any program. Hopefully, this will work. You can reinstall WinRAR, and if that association comes back, just do the above steps again to remove it. WinRAR might have code to reassoicate itself with those files, but it should ask you, or give you the option to ask before making the change.

Already tried that, edited post above. :(

What program is SUPPOSED to open cabs? I tried to open it and I got a security dialog asking me to select a program to open it from a list.

Have you rebooted? Maybe it needs a clean boot to remove any lingering traces of it?

If it shows up in your Add/Remove programs, I'd remove it first, then try again. Other than that, I haven't a clue....sorry. :(

Just got back from rebooting. Same old error message. :(

What would I be looking for in Add/Remove?

Here's the error:

I would look for HP Photo and Imaging in the add/remove.... Without actually seeing your comp, I'm not sure what else to check for. F:\ is you cd drive?

Yes, F is my CD drive. Tried it in the DVD drive out of sheer desperation, same message ethere.

The photo and imaging program wasn't in add/remove. I wonder if throwing it out the window would accomplish anything...

Nope, perfectly clean. :(

Thanks for trying, anyway. :( A friend suggested copying the CD to the harddrive and running the setup file from there. Don't see how that'll help, but I'll try..

I solved the problem by copying the CD to my harddrive and running the setup from the hard disk itself. Go figure.

You solved it, so you won't need anymore help, but...

.cab-files contain compressed files, and works the same way zip- and rar-files do. This is why they are associated with these programs. Windows Explorer can also read and show these files. I don't think unassociating the filetype with WinZip and WinRar would have help your case, and wonder what reasons you had to do that? I think especially installation programs use .cab-files instead of .zip-files for some reason.

Also, I don't like the Filetype-handler in Windows, it never does what I want it to...
