Help! My Civilization is ruled by disembodied eyes and teeth!

I've just purchased Civ IV today, and whenever I choose a civilization, the leader's body is not in the window, just their animated teeth and mouth. It actually looks rather creepy.

When I start the game, I can see everything EXCEPT for the terrain. Units, cities, buttons; it's all there on a field of black.

Did something go wrong in the installation, or is this a larger problem?

This is a common issue 'out-of-box'. You need to download the latest patch (1.52) through the 'advanced' in the game menu then 'Check for updates'. The patch will then install and should fix the issue with the leader heads.

As for the black terrain. Your graphics card (IGP) doesn't support TnL which Civ4 needs to display the terrain. If you still get black terrain after patching, you might need to upgrade the video hardware.
