Help the newb beat Warlord please

One key mistake that I see a lot of new players make is that they irrigate grassland, when really you want to mine it, especially at the beginning, since irrigating grassland while in despotism doesn't do you any good. This will make your cities a lot more productive than similar sized AI cities.

Another mistake common to inexperienced players is that they space their cities too far apart - for most of the game, your cities will be under size 12, thus wasting that extra space. With a tighter build, you can fit more cities, and thus have more production than the AI, with the same amount of territory. Also, having smaller cities makes them easier to mananage on the unhappiness angle - size 24 cities are a lot tricker to keep happy than 2 size 12 cities. I have found it best to usually have 14-16 tiles per city.

Finally, make sure to build lots of artillery- when you go on the attack, you want as much artillery as you have defensive units. 20 artillery + 20 infantry + 10 calvary will do much better on the attack than 30 infantry & 30 calvary.
