I have a question,

I am a relatively new player, not just to Rhye's but to civ in general, and I decided to play as Carthage. I love their history, Leaders, and was eager to conquer rome. A couple hours later I had conquered Egypt, and settled my second city on the wheat. Then came the barbarians

I needed to get the great wall, and almost got it. I saw it on my border with Rome, but then I realied that they had gotten it. I don't have a big enough army, or enough money to hold off the barbs forever. I was wondering if it was worth it to keep on carthage, and some tips on how to do that, or if I should just become a new civ as soon as possible.

First of all, welcome to the forums.

As you are a new player, it's likely you still have an older version of the mod. If so, you can download a new version here.
If you are playing BTS (Beyond the Sword), I recommend RFCMarathon. It's completely the same as the latest vanilla RFC, but it has 2 extra gamespeed options as well as some speed improvements. So if you are playing that mod on normal speed, it's completely the same as the vanilla RFC, but a little faster.

What difficulty are you playing? Beware that the difficulty levels are different from the levels of vanilla BTS. (even though they have the same name) One of the things that depents on the level is the amount of barbs. When you play on viceroy, the amount of barbs is much less than monarch or emperor.

Also, the difficulty level depents on the civ you playing. Some civs are hard, even though you play on viceroy. Mali for example is very hard. You can take a look here to see what some more experienced people think of the difficulty of the civs. (NOTE: It's an older thread based on an older version. Some civs have been made a little more or a little less difficult in the new version. But in general, it's quite accurate.)

However, I think the best option is to play the game. That's the best way to gather experience.

Okay thank you. I am playing the version that came with bts, and I appreciate the link you sent me. I am just extremely pissed that Rome built the great wall because from all the strategy I've been reading it it key for Carthage to win.
Oh and I think that I'm starting out on viceroy.

Rome builds a lot of wonders, yeah. The main thing you need to remember for Carthage is to pick your cities smartly and tech fast.

Welcome to the forums :D
Might I interest you in Dawn of Civilisation? a mommod for the Rhyes and fall mod. This mod will provide a more historically accurate gameplay as wonders are restricted to religions or recources that make it difficult for a civ to built a wonder that is in no way connected to their history. Also more civs :D
As for the carthagese. I've never played with them, but I'm pretty sure they start out with 2 settlers a small army and a galley right? My advice would be not to settle north africa, but in spain instead. The south of spain is probably their historical area (if not core) and gives you more production, food, recources and commerce (production is necessary for building troops, buildings, wonders), (Food to gain / maintain population), (recources provide health bonus, production bonus for certain buildings/wonders and allow for building more advance units), and the greatest pluss of all. No barbarians :D. You can easily span over the entire Iberian Penisula, that should keep you safe from barabarians, except of a few pesky galleys and trimes that chooke your cities.
Keep on in mind that setteling on a resources means that you're wasting the food/production/commerce bonus they provide. This can be a tremendous waste, and should be avoided unless the spot provides a great advantage in some way. (Acces to more recources in the fat cross (the tiles that can be worked by a city the 20 clossest to your city)).
Also if you stay in North africa you should make the best use of the UP of the carthages. Make sure you always have some money in reserve to buy mercanaries whenever needed.
Conquering Egypth might be tempting, but it requires a significant army to keep it safe from barbarians, and it yields you little production. So that army needs to come from somewhere else. Maybe you should focus on conquering the romans instead.
The Great Wall is also pretty vital for a Roman victory as well (Roman gets trampled by barbarians after a while)
