So the agreed upon war declaration removed the Defensive Pact. Fortunately, Oda accepted it again after.

Funnily enough on more than one occasion I attacked and conquered several cities from an AI...Several turns later I open diplomacy, and they are all nice and friendly with me. You'd think they'd hate me for beating them up like that, but no...

I did the rifleman slingshot on Emperor today, and CS indeed get your level of technology army. Was funny to ally 2 of them and declare war on poor Egypt with warriors and bowmen - by the time my first rifleman got to their capital one CS got an extra city under it's control.
