Is there a thread somewhere that explains how to actually install Scenario's and Mod's? I see many that I would like to download, but have no clue what to do with them once I get them.

Thanks

yea i think i can help with that you should extract the mods into your mods folder for whatever version of civ you wish to play it under for me that is
C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods
from there you should load civ and go to advanced in the menu then click load a mod after that select the mod you want and the game should restart with that mod loaded

Don't install a mod that doesn't come with an installer, that's the easiest thing to do. Probably if the modmaker hasn't taken the time to create an installer, their mod isn't very stable anyway. If you really want to try a specific mod that doesn't have an installer, you need to ask the mod's creator for instructions on how to install and use it, though in general the mod should go in the BtS/Mods folder.

Scenarios go in the .../My Documents/My Games/Beyond the Sword/PublicMaps folder. Not sure what the ... stuff before My Documents looks like on your computer, but you should be able to figure it out.

thats a straight up lame ass statement phungus. To say if a mod doesn't have an installer than it isn't stable? Straight up ignorance. :old: I'll have you know there are many mods out there with no installer than are more stable than anything you've ever created.

Doubtful on the second point (show me a modpack that is more stable the LoR -other then BUG which comes with an installer, I can't think of one, and neither can you). As to your overall point, there are exceptions to every rule, but really in general I stand by my assertion. I mean look around, there are literally 1000s of mods out there, most of which are pretty messed up. There are probably only a dozen or so with installers, and pretty much every one of them will work correctly and are well built.

So in general for your average user, it's just simpler and easier to stick to mods that have a straightforward install process, ie, download and install. If they do have an interest in a specific mod that doesn't have an installer, they should of course try it, but at the very least the modmaker should have detailed instructions on how to install the mod (where to put it, if it needs to be extracted, etc.), if they can't even do that, you can be pretty sure the mod is simply not worth checking out.

Well there are several well thought out simple mods that are the same in regard to stability as BtS. Now I wouldn't go and claim all of them are good nor are all of them stable but there are plenty exceptions to the rule in this case. I'm not defending my own mod btw, its basically to the point of being a mega mod now, and it quite stable I might add. Its 100% crash proof except on multi-player, and thats only because of RevDCM.

I'll agree with you that there are thousands of garbage mods out there, and your right one could reasonably assume that the ones with the installers are some of the better ones and surely should be stable, but that doesn't exclude some 10mb modpack that changes only XML and art from being stable, just because its uploaded in a compressed folder instead of a self extracting archive.

I used to have my mod as a self extracting archive, but I had read several places that people actually prefer the zip's to the exe's, so I went back for now. Its not really that hard to just extract a folder to the mods folder. If people can't do that, well then I'm sorry about that, its really easy and simple, no harder than writing a text message. I guess the best solution would be to offer both a zip and an exe so everybody can be happy.
